Surgical patients with complex cardiac disease often require noncardiac surgery. There have been recent articles written concerning the role of the cardiothoracic anesthesiologist as a consultant in the operating room as well as outside the operating theatre. With the evolution of the cardiothoracic anesthesia consult service (CACS), there are many issues regarding medical billing, financial reimbursement, and Medicare rules that anesthesiologists may not be familiar with.

Transesophageal Echocardiogram-Guided Stent Placement in Superior Vena Cava Syndrome Secondary to Granulomatous Lung Disease: A Case Series and Literature Review.

Obstruction of the superior vena cava (SVC) is an uncommon, but potentially life-threatening condition due to likely development of edema in the head and neck and potential respiratory compromise. Less than half of those affected by SVC syndrome survive more than a year. Obstruction can be from neoplasms or secondary to benign disease.

Assessing electronic interruptions experienced by an anesthesiology clinical director.

Study Objective: The purpose of this study was to assess the workflow interruptions on an anesthesiology clinical director (CD). By assessing the interruptions on the CD, we hypothesize that these frequent interruptions would prohibit the CD from medical direction of residents or certified nurse anesthetists in operating rooms.

Design: Cellular phone data were obtained from Verizon Wireless statements over 10 months, August 2012 through May 2013.
