Physical activity and stroke mortality in women. Ten-year follow-up of the Nord-Trondelag health survey, 1984-1986.

Background And Purpose: Few studies have reported a protective effect of physical activity on stroke in women, particularly among elderly women. This study was conducted to examine the association between different levels of leisure-time physical activity and stroke mortality in a large prospective study of middle-aged and elderly women.

Methods: We conducted a 10-year mortality follow-up of women aged >/=50 years, free from stroke at baseline (n=14 101), who participated in the Nord-Trondelag Health Survey in Norway during 1984-1986.

Lifestyle factors and risk of cerebral infarction.

Background And Purpose: We evaluated the impact of lifestyle factors on the risk of ischemic stroke.

Methods: We used a nested case-control design. The cases comprised 163 persons (median age 69 years) admitted to a stroke unit and diagnosed with acute cerebral infarction.

[Endoscopic biopsy of the small intestine in children].

As from 1983, endoscopy with biopsy in general anesthesia was used instead of the capsule suction method in children with suspected coeliac disease in a county hospital. A study was carried out to evaluate mean endoscopy time, duration of general anesthesia, complications and quality of biopsies. An ordinary Olympus GIF-Q endoscope (diameter 11 mm) was used in 17 patients, eight boys and nine girls.

Long-term treatment of duodenal ulcer with trimipramine. A double-blind study.

Sixty-two patients with healed duodenal or prepyloric ulcers completed a double-blind long-term trial with either 25 mg/day of trimipramine (32 patients) or placebo (30 patients). Endoscopy was performed when marked dyspeptic complaints occurred or after a 1-year follow-up study. Eleven patients in the trimipramine-treated group and 18 patients in the placebo group had relapses, with endoscopically confirmed ulcers or erosions with duodenitis and severe symptoms, revealing a statistically significant difference between the groups in favour of trimipramine.

Trimipramine in the treatment of duodenal ulcer. A multicenter, open study.

Sixty patients with endoscopically confirmed duodenal ulcers were treated with 50 mg of trimipramine daily. After the end of the treatment 45 patients showed healed ulcers. Ulcer healing was not related to serum concentration of trimipramine, but seemed to be influenced by smoking habits and duration of the total and actual disease history.

We have examined 15 members of a family with Gardner's syndrome. In the first and second generations, 4 (possibly 5) of 6 members died of cancer of the colon/rectum. Two of them were known to have plyposis coli.
