Raman spectroscopic analysis of archaeological specimens from the wreck of HMS Swift, 1770.

Specimens from underwater archaeological excavations have rarely been analysed by Raman spectroscopy probably due to the problems associated with the presence of water and the use of alternative techniques. The discovery of the remains of the Royal Navy warship HMS Swift off the coast of Patagonia, South America, which was wrecked in 1770 while undertaking a survey from its base in the Falkland/Malvinas Islands, has afforded the opportunity for a first-pass Raman spectroscopic study of the contents of several glass jars from a wooden chest, some of which had suffered deterioration of their contents owing to leakage through their stoppers. From the Raman spectroscopic data, it was possible to identify organic compounds such as anthraquinone and copal resin, which were empirically used as materia medica in the eighteenth century to treat shipboard diseases; it seems very likely, therefore, that the wooden chest belonged to the barber-surgeon on the ship.

Objective: To examine how disciplinary tribunals assess different forms of misconduct in deciding whether to remove doctors from practice for professional misconduct.

Design And Setting: Multivariable regression analysis of 485 cases in which tribunals found doctors guilty of professional misconduct. The cases came from four Australian states (New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland and Western Australia) and New Zealand and were decided over a 10-year period (1 January 2000 - 30 September 2009).

Ameliorating attention problems in children with sickle cell disease: a pilot study of methylphenidate.

Objective: This pilot study examined whether methylphenidate (MPH) was effective in enhancing cognitive performance and attention for children with sickle cell disease (SCD) with cerebrovascular complications who evidence attention problems.

Methods: In this multisite, pilot study, we evaluated 2 separate double-blind controlled clinical trials, including a laboratory trial of the short-term efficacy of MPH, with the second study a 3-week home/school crossover trial evaluating the efficacy of MPH. The laboratory trial included 14 participants between the age of 7 and 16 years.

Objectives: To describe professional discipline cases in Australia and New Zealand in which doctors were found guilty of professional misconduct, and to develop a typology for describing the misconduct.

Design And Setting: A retrospective analysis of disciplinary cases adjudicated in five jurisdictions (New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia and New Zealand) in 2000-2009.

Main Outcome Measures: Characteristics of the cases (setting, misconduct type, patient outcomes, disciplinary measure imposed), characteristics of the doctors involved (sex, specialty, years since qualification) and population-level case rates (by doctor characteristics).

[Non-specific hemosorption: current state and prospects].

Results of experimental and clinical evaluation of the method of nonspecific hemosorption obtained in the Laboratory of Clinical Immunology and Republican Centre for Application of Extracorporeal Therapies, Research Institute of Physical and Clinical Medicine, since 1985 are presented. Analysis of these and literature data on the efficiency of hemosorption in non-toxicological practice allows for the conclusion of socio-medical and economic feasibility of more extensive application of the method.

The purpose of this study is to describe a new dynamic external fixator (EF) to be applied after knee dislocation, in combination with posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) reconstruction. This approach permits an immediate postoperative mobilization of the joint, with the possibility to perform a delayed ACL reconstruction and eventually reducing the complication rate related to multiple ligament surgery.

A number of fish species receive forebrain cholinergic input but two recent reports failed to find evidence of cholinergic cell bodies or fibers in the olfactory bulbs (OBs) of zebrafish. In the current study we sought to confirm these findings by examining the OBs of adult zebrafish for choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) immunoreactivity. We observed a diffuse network of varicose ChAT-positive fibers associated with the nervus terminalis ganglion innervating the mitral cell/glomerular layer (MC/GL).

The purpose of this study was to determine residents' perception of the utility of personal digital assistants (PDAs) and their influence on clinical practice at two teaching hospitals, one of which subsidized resident purchase of a PDA. A total of 21 residents in the unsubsidized group (32%) and 24 residents in the subsidized group (96%) owned a PDA.
