To elucidate the metabolic and pathological significance of diminished DRP1 in obese adipose tissue, we utilized adipose tissue-specific DRP1 KO mice challenged with a high-fat diet.

Development and external validation of a model to predict multidrug-resistant bacterial infections in patients with cirrhosis.

Unlabelled: With the increasing rate of infections caused by multidrug-resistant organisms (MDRO), selecting appropriate empiric antibiotics has become challenging. We aimed to develop and externally validate a model for predicting the risk of MDRO infections in patients with cirrhosis.

Methods: We included patients with cirrhosis and bacterial infections from two prospective studies: a transcontinental study was used for model development and internal validation (n = 1302), and a study from Argentina and Uruguay was used for external validation (n = 472).

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) affects 20-25% of the general population and is associated with morbidity, increased mortality, and elevated health-care costs. Most NAFLD risk factors are modifiable and, therefore, potentially amenable to being reduced by public health policies. To date, there is no information about NAFLD-related public health policies in the Americas.

Background: The heterologous expression of isopentenyl transferase (IPT) under the transcriptional control of the senescence-associated receptor-like kinase (SARK) promoter delayed cellular senescence and, through it, increased drought tolerance in plants. To evaluate the effect of pSARK::IPT expression in bread wheat, six independent transgenic events were obtained through the biolistic method and evaluated transgene expression, phenology, grain yield and physiological biomass components in plants grown under both drought and well-irrigating conditions. Experiments were performed at different levels: (i) pots and (ii) microplots inside a biosafety greenhouse, as well as under (iii) field conditions.

Fiber engraving for bioink bioprinting within 3D printed tissue engineering scaffolds.

In this work, we describe a new 3D printing methodology for the fabrication of multimaterial scaffolds involving the combination of thermoplastic extrusion and low temperature extrusion of bioinks. A fiber engraving technique was used to create a groove on the surface of a thermoplastic printed fiber using a commercial 3D printer and a low viscosity bioink was deposited into this groove. In contrast to traditional extrusion bioinks that rely on increased viscosity to prevent lateral spreading, this groove creates a defined space for bioink deposition.

Introduction: Malnutrition is a common problem in the elderly population but has not been fully studied in elderly people with hip fractures. The goal is to estimate annual mortality based on nutrition in the elderly with hip fracture and compare motor functionality.

Material And Methods: Retrospective cohort of patients over 65 years of age with hip fracture included in the Institutional Register of The Elderly with Hip Fracture of a University Hospital, between July 2014 and July 2018.

Three-Dimensional Extrusion Printing of Porous Scaffolds Using Storable Ceramic Inks.

In this study, we describe the additive manufacturing of porous three-dimensionally (3D) printed ceramic scaffolds prepared with hydroxyapatite (HA), β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP), or the combination of both with an extrusion-based process. The scaffolds were printed using a novel ceramic-based ink with reproducible printability and storability properties. After sintering at 1200°C, the scaffolds were characterized in terms of structure, mechanical properties, and dissolution in aqueous medium.

A 42-Year-Old Woman with Untreated Growth Hormone Insensitivity, Diabetic Retinopathy, and Gene Sequencing Identifies a Variant of Laron Syndrome.

BACKGROUND Growth hormone insensitivity and reduced levels of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) are associated with metabolic syndrome that includes obesity, hyperglycemia, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and dyslipidemia. Laron syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive condition associated with insensitivity to growth hormone that results in short stature and metabolic syndrome and is usually diagnosed in childhood. This report is of a 42-year-old Mexican woman with untreated growth hormone insensitivity and diabetic retinopathy, in whom gene sequencing supported the identification of a variant of Laron syndrome.

He was born premature and small for gestational age. Genital examination classified the patient as Tanner I-II with small penis and testicular size for his age.

Clinical and molecular diagnosis of a cartilage-hair hypoplasia with IGF-1 deficiency.

Cartilage-hair hypoplasia syndrome (CHH) is a rare autosomal recessive condition characterized by metaphyseal chondrodysplasia and characteristic hair, together with a myriad of other symptoms, being most common immunodeficiency and gastrointestinal complications. A 15-year-old Mexican male initially diagnosed with Hirschsprung disease and posterior immunodeficiency, presents to our department for genetic and complementary evaluation for suspected CHH. Physical, biochemical, and genetic studies confirmed CHH together with IGF-1 deficiency.

New portable system for dental plaque measurement using a digital single-lens reflex camera and image analysis: Study of reliability and validation.

Background: The quantification of the dental plaque (DP) by indices has limitations: They depend on the subjective operator's evaluation and are measured in an ordinal scale. The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate a method to measure DP in a proportional scale.

Use of a gesture user interface as a touchless image navigation system in dental surgery: Case series report.

Purpose: The purposes of this study were to develop a workstation computer that allowed intraoperative touchless control of diagnostic and surgical images by a surgeon, and to report the preliminary experience with the use of the system in a series of cases in which dental surgery was performed.

Materials And Methods: A custom workstation with a new motion sensing input device (Leap Motion) was set up in order to use a natural user interface (NUI) to manipulate the imaging software by hand gestures. The system allowed intraoperative touchless control of the surgical images.

Abatacept in subjects who switch from intravenous to subcutaneous therapy: results from the phase IIIb ATTUNE study.

Objective: To assess safety, immunogenicity and efficacy in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients switched from long-term intravenous to subcutaneous (SC) abatacept.

Methods: In this phase IIIb, open-label, single-arm trial, patients who completed ≥4 years of intravenous abatacept (in long-term extensions of two phase III studies) were enrolled to receive SC abatacept (125 mg/week). The primary objective was safety during the first 3 months after switching from intravenous therapy.

Systemic fibrinolysis through intraosseous vascular access in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction.

In emergency situations, intraosseous cannulation represents an alternative route of vascular access when peripheral vein insertion is difficult. We present the first documented case of intraosseous systemic fibrinolysis in a patient with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction. In this case, repetitive episodes of ventricular fibrillation occurred soon after first contact with emergency care providers.

The transient receptor potential melastatin 7 (trpm7) channel kinase is a primary regulator of magnesium homeostasis in vitro. Here we show that trpm7 is an important regulator of cation homeostasis as well as kidney function in vivo. Using zebrafish trpm7 mutants, we show that early larvae exhibit reduced levels of both total magnesium and total calcium.

Integrated preventive care coverage effectiveness in high-risk worksites in Mexico.

Objectives: Worksites have been considered a propitious environment for promoting health. In 2005, an integrated preventive care (IPC) system was implemented in Mexico consisting of health promotion and disease prevention interrelated activities, delivered on a single visit and on location. This project contributes relevant information on IPC coverage and its degree of effectiveness on providing health promotion services to workers at high-risk worksites.

The zebrafish is a premier model organism yet lacks a system for assigning postembryonic fish to developmental stages. To provide such a staging series, we describe postembryonic changes in several traits that are visible under brightfield illumination or through vital staining and epiflourescent illumination. These include the swim bladder, median and pelvic fins, pigment pattern, scale formation, larval fin fold, and skeleton.
