Methods: This was a prospective observational study including 25 patients with HNSCC treated with immunotherapy or chemotherapy after a prior platinum-based regimen. Low density neutrophils (LDNs) and serum markers were analyzed.

Combined use of monensin and virginiamycin to improve rumen and liver health and performance of feedlot-finished steers.

Monensin and virginiamycin are included in beef cattle finishing diets as prophylaxis to minimize the incidence of ruminal acidosis and liver abscesses. Due to different and probably complementary modes of action, this study aimed to determine the effects of a combination of monensin and virginiamycin, both included in the diet at recommended doses, on ruminal health, the occurrence of liver abscesses, and growth performance of feedlot-finished cattle. One hundred and forty-four steers (6 animals/pen) were fed 1 of 3 corn-based finishing diets containing 30 mg of monensin (), 25 mg of virginiamycin (), or 30 and 25 mg of monensin and virginiamycin (), respectively, per kilogram of dry matter.

Globe penetration during loco-regional anesthesia: prevalence and review of cases.

Aim: To describe prevalence and different clinical signs and management of cases with penetrating eye injuries during loco-regional anesthesia for ophthalmic surgery.

Methods: A retrospective review of clinical records was carried out, identifying cases of globe penetration secondary to peribulbar anesthesia injection during 5y activity in Centro de Oftalmología Barraquer.

[Isolated conjunctival sebaceous adenoma associated with acute endophtalmitis].

Sebaceous adenoma of the conjunctiva is a very rare lesion of uncertain origin. It is usually associated with Muir-Torre syndrome in which neoplasms are also found in other parts of the body. We present the case of a 71-year-old man without a previous or family history of neoplasia, who presented with severe inflammation and an infection in his right eye associated with a tumor of the conjunctiva near the caruncle.

Follow-Up Study Confirms the Presence of Gastric Cancer DNA Methylation Hallmarks in High-Risk Precursor Lesions.

To adopt prevention strategies in gastric cancer, it is imperative to develop robust biomarkers with acceptable costs and feasibility in clinical practice to stratified populations according to risk scores. With this aim, we applied an unbiased genome-wide CpG methylation approach to a discovery cohort composed of gastric cancer ( = 24), and non-malignant precursor lesions ( = 64). Then, candidate-methylation approaches were performed in a validation cohort of precursor lesions obtained from an observational longitudinal study ( = 264), with a 12-year follow-up to identify repression or progression cases.

A spatial analysis to evaluate the impact of deregulation policies in the pharmacy sector: Evidence from the case of Navarre.

Community pharmacies represent unusual enterprises as their main function is intrinsically related to the provision of healthcare services. Hence, market competition in this sector needs to be regulated, in order to ensure equitable accessibility, efficiency and quality of services. However, recently a general deregulation trend may be observed in Europe.

Objective: The main study objectives were to describe the practice of mechanical ventilation over an 18-year period in Mexico, and estimate changes in mortality among critical patients subjected to invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV).

Design: A retrospective subanalysis of a prospective observational study conducted in 1998, 2004, 2010 and 2016 was carried out.

Retinal acute toxicity may be produced by several etiologies. Iatrogenic toxicity is one of the most-feared complications related to vitreoretinal surgery. The authors report a case of retinal acute toxicity due to the use of perfluorooctane during an uneventful retinal detachment surgery done elsewhere.

Therapeutic efficacy of the live-attenuated Mycobacterium tuberculosis vaccine, MTBVAC, in a preclinical model of bladder cancer.

Intravesical instillation of bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) has been a first-line therapy for non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer for the last 4 decades. However, this treatment causes serious adverse events in a significant number of patients and a substantial percentage of recurrence episodes. MTBVAC is a live-attenuated vaccine derived from a Mycobacterium tuberculosis clinical isolate and is currently under evaluation in clinical trials to replace BCG as a tuberculosis vaccine.

Autologous Haematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation for Refractory Crohn's Disease: Efficacy in a Single-Centre Cohort.

Background: Haematopoietic stem cell transplantation [HSCT] is considered a therapeutic option for patients with severe Crohn's disease [CD] unresponsive to currently available therapies.

Methods: Autologous HSCT was considered for CD patients with active disease, unresponsive or intolerant to approved medications and unsuitable for surgery. After HSCT, patients were closely followed up every 6 weeks during the first 2 years and every 6 months thereafter up to 5 years.

Expanding the Donor Pool Through Intensive Care to Facilitate Organ Donation: Results of a Spanish Multicenter Study.

Background: Intensive Care to facilitate Organ Donation (ICOD) may help to increase the donor pool. We describe the Spanish experience with ICOD.

Methods: Achieving Comprehensive Coordination in Organ Donation (ACCORD)-Spain consisted of an audit of the donation pathway from patients who died as a result of a devastating brain injury (possible donors) in 68 hospitals during November 1, 2014, to April 30, 2015.

A comprehensive phylogenetic analysis of copper transporting P ATPases from bacteria of the Rhizobiales order uncovers multiplicity, diversity and novel taxonomic subtypes.

The ubiquitous cytoplasmic membrane copper transporting P and P -type ATPases pump out Cu and Cu , respectively, to prevent cytoplasmic accumulation and avoid toxicity. The presence of five copies of Cu-ATPases in the symbiotic nitrogen-fixing bacteria Sinorhizobium meliloti is remarkable; it is the largest number of Cu -transporters in a bacterial genome reported to date. Since the prevalence of multiple Cu-ATPases in members of the Rhizobiales order is unknown, we performed an in silico analysis to understand the occurrence, diversity and evolution of Cu -ATPases in members of the Rhizobiales order.

Progression of Cutaneous Vitiligo in a Patient with Large Posterior Choroidal Melanoma: A Case Report.

Background/aims: The aim of our study was to report a case of progression of cutaneous vitiligo after large posterior choroidal melanoma diagnosis.

Methods: The clinical history, fundus findings and histopathological features suggest the diagnosis of cutaneous vitiligous progression after a diagnosis of large posterior choroidal melanoma.

Results: A 30-year-old female, with a personal history of cutaneous vitiligo for 12 years, was diagnosed with choroidal melanoma 18 months previously.

IV Spanish Consensus Conference on Helicobacter pylori infection treatment.

Helicobacter pylori approximately infect 50% of Spanish population and causes chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer and gastric cancer. Until now, three consensus meetings on H.pylori infection had been performed in Spain (the last in 2012).

Transbronchial Cryobiopsy in Interstitial Lung Disease: Are We on the Right Path?

Background: A definitive and specific diagnosis of interstitial lung disease (ILD) often requires a histologic analysis of the lung parenchyma. A transbronchial biopsy with forceps has a limited diagnostic yield for idiopathic interstitial pneumonias. The incorporation of a transbronchial lung cryobiopsy for diagnosing ILD appears to be very promising, although there are only a few published studies in this regard.

Long-term results of the European achalasia trial: a multicentre randomised controlled trial comparing pneumatic dilation versus laparoscopic Heller myotomy.

Objective: Achalasia is a chronic motility disorder of the oesophagus for which laparoscopic Heller myotomy (LHM) and endoscopic pneumodilation (PD) are the most commonly used treatments. However, prospective data comparing their long-term efficacy is lacking.

Design: 201 newly diagnosed patients with achalasia were randomly assigned to PD (n=96) or LHM (n=105).

Traumatic endophthalmitis caused by Nocardia kruczakiae in a patient with traumatic eye injury.

Background: We describe a case of traumatic ocular endophthalmitis caused by Nocardia kruczakiae after vegetable trauma in an immunocompetent child.

Findings: A 5-year-old boy suffered from a trauma with a palm tree leaflet. Two months later, he was diagnosed with traumatic infectious uveitis and intumescent cataract with anterior capsule rupture.

Improving safety of autologous haematopoietic stem cell transplantation in patients with Crohn's disease.

Objective: To evaluate the feasibility and toxicity of autologous haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) for the treatment of refractory Crohn's disease (CD).

Design: In this prospective study, patients with refractory CD suffering an aggressive disease course despite medical treatment, impaired quality of life and in whom surgery was not an acceptable option underwent HSCT. Toxicity and complications during the procedure and within the first year following transplantation were evaluated, along with the impact of the introduction of supportive measures on safety outcomes.

Intensive care practices in brain death diagnosis and organ donation.

We conducted a multicentre study of 1844 patients from 42 Spanish intensive care units, and analysed the clinical characteristics of brain death, the use of ancillary testing, and the clinical decisions taken after the diagnosis of brain death. The main cause of brain death was intracerebral haemorrhage (769/1844, 42%), followed by traumatic brain injury (343/1844, 19%) and subarachnoid haemorrhage (257/1844, 14%). The diagnosis of brain death was made rapidly (50% in the first 24 h).
