Article Synopsis
  • * A study in Rio de Janeiro analyzed 88 P. aeruginosa isolates from 1995 to 2015, revealing a shift from earlier MDR strains to more resistant extensive drug-resistant (XDR) strains in recent years, particularly with increased resistance to critical antibiotics.
  • * Key resistance mechanisms identified included mutations in specific genes and the presence of carbapenemase genes, indicating a growing threat from high-risk clones of P. aeruginosa in the region.

In Brazil, since 2009, there has been an ever increasing widespread of the bla(KPC-2) gene, mainly in Klebsiella pneumoniae. This study aims to assess the molecular epidemiology and genetic background of this gene in Enterobacteriaceae (non-K. pneumoniae) species from 9 Brazilian states between 2009 and 2011.

Objective: To compare HRCT findings in cystic fibrosis (CF) patients chronically colonized with Pseudomonas aeruginosa or Staphylococcus aureus using the modified Bhalla CT scoring system, as well as to evaluate intraobserver and interobserver reliability of the method.

Methods: This was a retrospective cross-sectional study involving 41 CF patients, 26 of whom were chronically colonized with P. aeruginosa (Pa group), and 15 of whom were colonized with S.

A case of a post-surgical patient who developed a fatal bloodstream infection caused by high-level vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus gallinarum is reported. The isolate was found to carry both the vanC1 and vanA genes. This is the first report of an invasive infection associated with a vanA E.

Burkholderia pseudomallei is rarely isolated from cystic fibrosis patients outside known areas of endemicity. We report the recovery of B. pseudomallei from the sputum of a cystic fibrosis patient who lives in Brazil.

Meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus isolates were classified into three mupirocin susceptibility groups by the disc diffusion method using 5 and 200 microg mupirocin discs. The zone diameter observed for a 5 microg disc distinguished Mup(S) from the resistant strains (either Mup(RL) or Mup(RH)). On the other hand, a 200 microg disc distinguished the high-resistance Mup(RH) strains from the other two (Mup(S) or Mup(RL)).

Metallo-beta-lactamase production is emerging worldwide as an important mechanism of carbapenem resistance among nonfermentative Gram-negative isolates, and this mechanism is becoming frequently observed in Brazil. This study documents the occurrence and characteristics of an epidemic SPM-1-producing Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain in a teaching hospital located in Rio de Janeiro City, Brazil. The bla (SPM-1) gene and a class 1 integron were detected in 13 isolates, representing 20% of the 65 imipenem-resistant P.
