Our study aims are: (1) to evaluate phenotypically normal canine conjunctival and orbital tissue and tissue from canine lobular orbital adenomas (CLOAs) for the presence of viral genomic material and (2) phylogenetically classify detected DNA viruses to determine if a DNA virus is associated with CLOAs. A total of 31 formalin fixed paraffin embedded CLOA tissue samples, 4 papillomas or sarcoid, and 10 fresh clinically normal conjunctival tissues were included in this study. Genomic DNA was isolated from all samples and sequencing libraries were prepared.

Surgical excision is challenging and recurrence rates are high following excision alone. Enucleation and exenteration reduces the likelihood of recurrence, but is a radical therapeutic option for an otherwise visual and comfortable eye.

Indirect ophthalmoscopy revealed a smooth, bullous elevation in the superior-temporal retina OU. Study Design: Nulliparous, reproductive-aged women desiring an IUD for contraception were randomized to receive 400 mcg of buccal misoprostol or placebo 90 min prior to IUD insertion. Subjects completed a series of 100-mm visual analogue scales (VAS, anchors: 0=none, 100 mm=worst imaginable) to measure their perceived pain at several times points (anticipated pain, leg positioning, speculum placement, tenaculum placement, IUD insertion, equipment removal and 5 min postinsertion).

Background And Aims: Eosinophilic esophagitis (EE) continues to present clinical challenges, including a need for noninvasive tools to manage the disease. To identify a marker able to assess disease status in lieu of repeated endoscopies, we examined 3 noninvasive biomarkers, serum interleukin (IL)-5, serum eosinophil-derived neurotoxin (EDN), and stool EDN, and examined possible correlations of these with disease phenotype and activity (symptoms and histology) in a longitudinal study of children with EE.
Subjects And Methods: Children with EE were studied for up to 24 weeks (12 weeks on 1 of 2 corticosteroid therapies and 12 weeks off therapy).
Background & Aims: Although eosinophilic esophagitis is recognized increasingly, outcome data guiding therapy are limited. We conducted a prospective randomized trial comparing oral prednisone (P) and swallowed fluticasone (F) for histologic and clinical response.
Methods: Patients were randomized to receive P or F for 4 weeks, followed by an 8-week weaning protocol.
This paper uses 1996-97 Community Tracking Study data to analyze the effects of different insurance product designs on service use, access, and consumer assessments of care for nonelderly people with employer-sponsored insurance. Product types are defined by features including use of networks, gatekeeping, capitation, and group/staff model delivery systems. We found no evidence of differences across product types in unmet need or delayed care or use of hospitals, surgery, or emergency rooms.

This analysis addresses the question of biased selection into health maintenance organizations (HMOs) by using recent, nationally representative data from the Community Tracking Study (CTS) to compare the health status of nonelderly privately insured persons enrolled in HMO and non-HMO plans. Contrary to the conventional view that HMOs receive favorable selection, we find among the privately insured that HMO enrollees are not healthier and may be slightly less healthy. To help understand that result, we present evidence suggesting that other factors, including cost considerations, may be more important than health when people are deciding whether to enroll in an HMO.
