The University of Zambia (UNZA) Mentor Training Program is conducted annually to strengthen the mentorship capacity of postgraduate programs for the health professions. This intensive five-session course trains faculty members in the mentorship of students. Established by senior UNZA leaders and US-based collaborators, this program was designed to address gaps in mentorship identified at the institutional level.

Strong cultures of mentorship and research remain underdeveloped at many African universities, threatening future knowledge generation essential for health and development on the continent. To address these challenges, a mentorship program was developed in 2018 at the University of Zambia with an aim to enhance the institutional culture of mentorship and to build institutional capacity through an innovative 'train the trainer' faculty development model. In this study, we documented perceptions of lived experiences related to mentorship culture by following trainers and trainees and their mentees over two years.

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as other outbreaks, such as SARS and Ebola, bats are recognized as a critical species for mediating zoonotic infectious disease spillover events. While there is a growing concern of increased antimicrobial resistance (AMR) globally during this pandemic, knowledge of AMR circulating between bats and humans is limited. In this paper, we have reviewed the evidence of AMR in bats and discussed the planetary health aspect of AMR to elucidate how this is associated with the emergence, spread, and persistence of AMR at the human-animal interface.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic caused significant disruptions in international communications and travel for academic global health programs (AGHPs) in both high-income countries (HICs) and low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Given the importance of international travel and communication to AGHPs, the pandemic has likely had considerable impact on the education, research, and administrative components of these programs. To date, no substantive study has determined the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on AGHPs in HICs and LMICs.

Background: Capacity strengthening initiatives aimed at increasing research knowledge and skills of investigators in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) have been implemented over the last several decades. With increased capacity, local investigators will have greater leadership in defining research priorities and impact policy change to help improve health outcomes. Background: While many countries are transitioning from epidemics of undernutrition to overnutrition, Mozambique's very high 44% prevalence of stunting in children under age 5 years is cause for serious concern.

Methods: We conducted two population-based cross-sectional surveys of ~4000 female heads of households each in Zambézia Province, Mozambique from August-September 2010 (Baseline) and April-May 2014 (Endline) as part of the USAID funded Strengthening Communities through Integrated Programs (SCIP) grant. Anthropometric measurements were collected on 560 children aged 6-59 months at Baseline and 912 children at Endline and classified as: "stunted," a height-for-age z-score less than -2; "wasted," weight-for-height z-score less than -2; and "underweight," weight-for-age z-score less than -2.
