Bilateral Upper Extremity Hyperesthesia and Absence of Neck Tenderness in Four Adolescent Athletes With Cervical Spine Injuries.

Cervical spine injury in the pediatric athlete is an uncommon but potentially devastating condition that can require a heightened index of suspicion to correctly diagnose. Although some cervical spine injuries present overtly with paraplegia due to cord transection, others can present more subtly with symptoms suggestive of bilateral peripheral neuropathy. Patients with traumatic brachial neuropraxia or "stinger" physiology can present similarly, but symptoms are exclusively unilateral.

Missed opportunities to diagnose child physical abuse.

Objectives: This study aimed to determine the incidence of missed opportunities to diagnose abuse in a cohort of children with healing abusive fractures and to identify patterns present during previous medical visits, which could lead to an earlier diagnosis of abuse.

Methods: This is a retrospective descriptive study of a 7-year consecutive sample of children diagnosed with child abuse at a single children's hospital. Children who had a healing fracture diagnosed on skeletal survey and a diagnosis of child abuse were included.

Identification of unanticipated pelvic pathology on renal bedside ultrasound.

Bedside emergency ultrasound can be a useful initial test in children who present with abdominal pain. Our case describes a teenager who presented to the emergency department with back pain and right lower quadrant pain, suspicious for nephrolithiasis. The use of bedside ultrasound enabled timely diagnosis and management of an unanticipated condition.

Homeschooling parents' practices and beliefs about childhood immunizations.

Objective: Concern over the rise of vaccine preventable diseases (VPD) coupled with the increasing popularity of homeschooling makes understanding the attitudes and behaviors of homeschoolers regarding immunizations a critical area of investigation. This study was a pilot to investigate the immunization attitudes of homeschooling parents and the vaccination status of their children.

Methods: In the spring of 2010, online surveys were sent to a convenience sample of 707 homeschooling parents in Western Pennsylvania with children ages 0-18 years of age.

Bupropion induced serotonin syndrome: a case report.

Although there are no documented cases of serotonin syndrome (SS) following bupropion ingestion alone in the literature, the ability of bupropion to potentiate serotonin levels and lead to SS is known. A 15-year-old boy was found at home hallucinating. He then developed tonic-clonic activity.
