A reluctance to diagnose asthma in children under three who have recurrent cough and wheeze causes delays in the commencement of appropriate asthma treatment. Timely inhaled corticosteroid use may reduce asthma exacerbations and unnecessary visits to the emergency department and GPs. To address this delay, an advanced nurse practitioner in one children's community nursing team set up a respiratory assessment clinic for children under three who had recurrent respiratory difficulties.
