Article Synopsis
  • Poor agreement among lung transplant pathologists in assessing rejection has been noted, making inter-rater reliability crucial for effective patient care and clinical trial inclusion criteria.
  • A survey and diagnostic sessions with nine pathologists from eight centers evaluated their practices and scoring of high-risk histopathologic findings related to chronic lung allograft dysfunction (CLAD).
  • The results showed good inter-rater reliability for identifying high-risk findings after these alignment sessions, indicating that collaborative discussions improved consensus among pathologists.

We determined prognostic implications of acute lung injury (ALI) and organizing pneumonia (OP), including timing relative to transplantation, in a multicenter lung recipient cohort. We sought to understand clinical risks that contribute to development of ALI/OP. We analyzed prospective, histologic diagnoses of ALI and OP in 4786 lung biopsies from 803 adult lung recipients.

Background: Advanced age is an independent risk factor for morbidity and mortality after burn injury. Following burn, the intestines can become permeable leading to the leakage of bacteria and their products from the lumen of the ileum to the portal and systemic circulation. Here, we sought to determine the effects of advanced age on intestinal permeability post burn injury and assess intestinal inflammatory biomarkers.

Article Synopsis
  • In 2008, guidelines were established for researching autophagy, which has since gained significant interest and new technologies, necessitating regular updates to monitoring methods across various organisms.
  • The new guidelines emphasize selecting appropriate techniques to evaluate autophagy while noting that no single method suits all situations; thus, a combination of methods is encouraged.
  • The document highlights that key proteins involved in autophagy also impact other cellular processes, suggesting genetic studies should focus on multiple autophagy-related genes to fully understand these pathways.

Introduction: Older adults with cancer are at increased risk of delirium due to age, comorbidities, medications, cognitive impairment, and possibly cancer treatments. However, there is scant information on the risks of delirium with chemotherapy and approaches to prevent or treat it. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to summarize available evidence.

Diabetic nephropathy remains the principal cause of end-stage renal failure in the UK and its prevalence is set to increase. People with diabetes and end-stage renal failure on maintenance haemodialysis are highly vulnerable, with complex comorbidities, and are at high risk of adverse cardiovascular outcomes, the leading cause of mortality in this population. The management of people with diabetes receiving maintenance haemodialysis is shared between diabetes and renal specialist teams and the primary care team, with input from additional healthcare professionals providing foot care, dietary support and other aspects of multidisciplinary care.

This prospective study aimed to address changes in inflammatory response between different aged populations of patients who sustained burn and inhalation injury. Plasma and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) samples were collected from 104 patients within 15h of their estimated time of burn injury. Clinical variables, laboratory parameters, and immune mediator profiles were examined in association with clinical outcomes.
