Background: Renal transplant surgical proceedings are known to elicit periods of hypoxia and consequent blood flow reestablishment triggering ischemia-reperfusion (I-R) injury. Kidney damage induced by I-R injury associates with a higher risk of graft dysfunction and rejection. Anesthetic preconditioning exerts a beneficial effect on I-R injury by reducing oxidative stress, inflammation and apoptosis.

Aim: To assess whether the use of fibrin sealant shortens the closure time of postoperative enterocutaneous fistulas (ECFs).

Methods: The prospective case-control study included 70 patients with postoperative ECFs with an output of < 500 mL/d, a fistulous tract of > 2 cm and without any local complication. They were divided into study (n = 23) and control groups (n = 47).

Synopsis of recent research by authors named "Eliseo Portilla-deBuen"

  • - Eliseo Portilla-deBuen's research primarily focuses on surgical techniques and their effects on postoperative outcomes, particularly concerning ischemia-reperfusion injuries and enterocutaneous fistulas.
  • - His 2020 study highlights how anesthetic preconditioning can enhance gene expression related to sirtuin 2, potentially mitigating kidney damage associated with ischemia-reperfusion injury during renal transplant surgeries.
  • - Another significant contribution from 2010 examined the efficacy of fibrin sealant in reducing closure times for postoperative enterocutaneous fistulas, demonstrating its potential benefits in clinical recovery for patients.
