Sex differences in ischemic stroke during COVID-19 first outbreak in northern Italy.

Introduction: COVID-19 pandemic had a great impact on outcome in SARS-CoV-2 positive patients with ischemic stroke during the first wave in Italy. Few data are available on outcome stratified by sex.

Methods: The Italian Society of Hospital Neuroscience conducted a multi-center, retrospective, observational study on neurological complications in COVID-19 patients with ischemic stroke.

COVID-19-associated Guillain-Barré syndrome in the early pandemic experience in Lombardia (Italy).

Objective: To estimate the incidence and describe clinical characteristics and outcome of GBS in COVID-19 patients (COVID19-GBS) in one of the most hit regions during the first pandemic wave, Lombardia.

Methods: Adult patients admitted to 20 Neurological Units between 1/3-30/4/2020 with COVID19-GBS were included as part of a multi-center study organized by the Italian society of Hospital Neuroscience (SNO).

Results: Thirty-eight COVID19-GBS patients had a mean age of 60.

Erenumab Discontinuation After 12-Month Treatment: A Multicentric, Observational Real-Life Study.

Objective: To assess migraine outcome after 12-month treatment with erenumab and compare patients who underwent 3-month erenumab discontinuation following the first treatment cycle with those who continued monthly administrations.

Methods: This is a multicentric observational study in patients with migraine in treatment with erenumab. After a full 12-month treatment cycle (T), patients could either continue or discontinue erenumab for at least 3 months.

Genetic and epigenetic disease modifiers in an Italian family expressing ALS, FTD or PD clinical phenotypes.

The presence of the hexanucleotide repeat expansion (HRE) in gene is associated to the ALS/FTD spectrum, but also to parkinsonisms. We here describe an Italian family with the father diagnosed with Parkinson disease (PD) at the age of 67 and the two daughters developing FTD and ALS at 45 years of age. We searched for HRE with possible genetic and epigenetic modifiers to account for the intrafamilial phenotypic variability.

Impact of SARS-CoV-2 infection on acute intracerebral haemorrhage in northern Italy.

Introduction: Growing evidence has been published as to the impact of SARS-CoV-2 (Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2) on cerebrovascular events over the last few months, with considerable attention paid to ischemic strokes. Conversely, little is known about the clinical course of intracerebral haemorrhage (ICH) and simultaneous SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Method: The Italian Society of Hospital Neurosciences (SNO) promoted a multicentre, retrospective, observational study (SNO-COVID-19), involving 20 Neurological Departments in Northern Italy.

Rhabdomyolysis in hyponatremia and paraneoplastic syndrome of inappropriate antidiuresis.

We report a 26-year-old woman admitted to our hospital for generalized tonic seizure. Laboratory investigations revealed severe hyponatremia possibly triggered by vomiting and diarrhea. 24 hours after correction of hyponatremia she developed diffuse myalgias and marked hyperCKemia.

A case of multiple sclerosis with atypical onset associated with autoimmune hepatitis and silent coeliac disease.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) and coeliac disease (CD) are an uncommon association. Recently "MS-like illness and CNS white-matter abnormalities" have been demonstrated in patients with CD. We report the case of a 19-year-old female with MS, who presented an episode of headache at onset of disease and developed acute hepatitis (AH) 14 months later.

Follow-up of a large population of asymptomatic/oligosymptomatic hyperckemic subjects.

Six years before the present study we performed a retrospective study of 114 subjects presenting with asymptomatic / oligosymptomatic hyperckemia (raised creatine kinase blood levels), a diagnosis being made in 21 of them. We now present the results of a long-term follow-up in 55 of the still undiagnosed 93 individuals. Most of them have remained asymptomatic and did not develop specific neuromuscular disorders.

A case of CPT deficiency, homoplasmic mtDNA mutation and ragged red fibers at muscle biopsy.

A 45-year-old male patient had an episode of acute renal failure with myoglobinuria, myalgias, weakness, and markedly increased serum CK levels. Similar episodes had occurred in the past. Carnitine palmitoyl-transferase II (CPT II) deficiency was documented both biochemically and genetically.
