Article Synopsis
  • The interaction between cancer cells and the tumor microenvironment (TME) is crucial for tumor growth and offers new therapeutic targets, especially in gliomas, a type of aggressive brain tumor.
  • The TME is influenced by various factors and can change during tumor progression and treatment, but crosstalk between cancer and non-cancer cells is not well understood.
  • This review discusses how neurons and glial cells interact with glioma cells, highlighting new mechanisms that could be explored for developing effective treatments while maintaining healthy brain function.

Current strategies for glioma treatment are only partly effective because of the poor selectivity for tumoral cells. Hence, the necessity to identify novel approaches is urgent. Recent studies highlighted the effectiveness of the bacterial protein cytotoxic necrotizing factor 1 (CNF1) in reducing tumoral mass, increasing survival of glioma-bearing mice and protecting peritumoral neural tissue from dysfunction.
