Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) share many histopathological features; therefore, markers for differentiation are of diagnostic interest and may add to the understanding of the underlying mechanisms. The nitrergic system is upregulated in GERD and probably also in EoE.
