Promising therapeutic approaches to reduce morbidity and mortality are still missing. Within the early phase of abdominal sepsis, apoptosis of neutrophil granulocytes is inhibited, which is linked to tissue damage and septic shock.

Immune Phenotypic Characterization of a TRAIL-Knockout Mouse.

The TNF-superfamily member TRAIL is known to mediate selective apoptosis in tumor cells suggesting this protein as a potential antitumor drug target. However, initial successful pr-clinical results could not be translated into the clinic. Reasons for the ineffectiveness of TRAIL-targeting in tumor therapies could include acquired TRAIL resistance.

Effect of bowel preparation on intestinal permeability and inflammatory response during postoperative ileus in mice.

Background: Postoperative ileus entails pathophysiological changes in mucosal permeability and an intestinal inflammatory immune response. We hypothesized that preoperative selective decontamination of the digestive tract combined with preoperative mechanical bowel preparation might be advantageous to prevent or reduce permeability changes and immune response in postoperative ileus.

Methods: Postoperative ileus was induced in mice by standardized small bowel manipulation.
