Renal dysfunction is a complication of obesity and can improve after metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS), but factors like body composition need more research, especially in males and females.
A study of 196 patients showed that after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, men improved their kidney function based on weight loss, while women’s improvement was more related to visceral fat levels.
The findings suggest that visceral adipose tissue significantly affects kidney function in women, indicating that body composition plays a key role in understanding renal health after weight loss surgery.
