Background: Medical dramas have been popular since their inception, especially among medical students. We hypothesized that the recent increase in the availability of TV medical series through online streaming platforms has probably changed health science students' viewing habits as well as the representation of bioethical conflicts and health professionals.

Methods: We invited undergraduate students of medicine, nursing, and human biology to complete a self-administered questionnaire about their viewing habits and perceptions of the depictions of bioethical issues and professionalism in TV medical series.

Small peptides play important roles in the signalling cascades that steer plant growth, development and defence, and often crosstalk with hormonal signalling. Thereby, they also modulate metabolism, including the production of bioactive molecules that are of high interest for human applications. Yew species (Taxus spp.

Taxol is a complex diterpene alkaloid scarcely produced in nature and with a high anticancer activity. Biotechnological systems for taxol production based on cell cultures of Taxus spp. have been developed, but the growing commercial demand for taxol and its precursors requires the optimization of these procedures.

Coronatine is a toxin produced by the pathogen Pseudomonas syringae. This compound has received much attention recently for its potential to act as a plant growth regulator and elicitor of plant secondary metabolism. To gain more insight into the mechanism by which elicitors can affect the biosynthesis of paclitaxel (Px) and related taxanes, the effect of coronatine (Cor) and methyl jasmonate (MeJA) on Taxus media cell cultures has been studied.

To achieve a better understanding of taxol metabolism and accumulation in Taxus cell cultures, a T. baccata cell line growing for 20 days in a selected growth medium was treated at the beginning of the experiment with several concentrations of taxol (25, 50, 100 and 200mgL(-1)). Compared with an untreated control, all these taxol concentrations stimulated cell-associated taxol content (up to 32.

Paclitaxel and baccatin III-producing cells of Taxus baccata were immobilized within Ca(2+)-alginate beads. Under established optimum conditions for the biosynthesis of both taxanes, the yields of paclitaxel and baccatin III in shake-flask cultures of free cells increased by factors of up to 3 and 2, respectively, in the corresponding cultures of immobilized cells. Although the scale-up from shake-flask to bioreactor culture usually results in reduced productivities when both free and immobilized cells were grown in the same optimum conditions in three different bioreactor types (Stirred, Airlift, and Wave) running for 24 days in a batch mode and with the system optimized in each case, there was a considerable increase in the yields of paclitaxel and baccatin III.

Scopolamine is a pharmaceutically important tropane alkaloid extensively used as an anticholinergic agent. Here, we report the simultaneous introduction and overexpression of genes encoding the rate-limiting upstream enzyme putrescine N-methyltransferase (PMT) and the downstream enzyme hyoscyamine 6 beta-hydroxylase (H6H) of scopolamine biosynthesis in transgenic henbane (Hyoscyamus niger) hairy root cultures. Transgenic hairy root lines expressing both pmt and h6h produced significantly higher (P < 0.

In order to increase the production of the pharmaceuticals hyoscyamine and scopolamine in hairy root cultures, a binary vector system was developed to introduce the T-DNA of the Ri plasmid together with the tobacco pmt gene under the control of CaMV 35S promoter, into the genome of Datura metel and Hyoscyamus muticus. This gene codes for putrescine:SAM N-methyltransferase (PMT; EC. 2.
