The close association between membranes and organelles, and the intense chloroplast remodeling in parenchyma cells of extrafloral nectaries occurred only at the secretion time and suggest a relationship with the nectar secretion. Associations between membranes and organelles have been well documented in different tissues and cells of plants, but poorly explored in secretory cells. Here, we described the close physical juxtaposition between membranes and organelles, mainly with chloroplasts, in parenchyma cells of Citharexylum myrianthum (Verbenaeceae) extrafloral nectaries under transmission electron microscopy, using conventional and microwave fixation.

Article Synopsis
  • Diatraea saccharalis, a key pest of sugarcane, is controlled by the parasitic wasp Cotesia flavipes, but the impact of this parasitism on the host's midgut remains largely unexplored.
  • The midgut epithelium of D. saccharalis larvae consists of various cell types, including columnar and regenerative cells that contain spherites, which have significant functional roles.
  • Research indicates that parasitized larvae show an increased number of spherites, particularly in the anterior midgut, suggesting a connection to ionic imbalances and possible alterations in ion transport influenced by the parasitic relationship.

The excretory duct in the silk gland of the sugarcane borer Diatraea saccharalis consists of two morphologically distinct regions, recognized by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The thin posterior region, adjacent to the glandular region, presents a regular surface. Secretory vesicles containing either electron-dense or fibrillar cuticular-like materials are observed in their apical cytoplasm; the same cuticular materials were detected as extracellular deposits among the microvilli.

The silk gland in Lepidoptera larvae is responsible for the silk production used for shelter or cocoon construction. The secretion of fibroin and sericin by the different silk gland regions are well established. There are few attempts to detect lipid components in the insect silk secretion, although the presence of such element may contribute to the resistance of the shelter to wet environment.

This investigation compares the peritrophic membrane (PM) morphology along the midgut of susceptible (SL) and resistant (RL) Anticarsia gemmatalis larvae to the AgMNPV. The PM increased the thickness from the anterior to the posterior midgut region in both insects strain; however, the intensity of FITC-WGA reaction of the PM in the RL were greater than in SL. The PM in RL was ultrastructurally constituted by several layers of fibrous/vesicular materials in comparison with the few ones in SL.

The morphometric study of the midgut in Diatraea saccharalis (Lepidoptera) larvae parasitized by the Cotesia flavipes (Hymenoptera) showed that there was significant increase in the columnar, goblet and regenerative cells and their nuclei; the midgut lumen diameter and the epithelial height were also increased in the parasitized larvae. The multivariate analysis showed that parasitism affected the columnar cell only in the posterior region, and the goblet cells along the midgut length (anterior and posterior regions).

Background And Aims: Nectar production in the Bignoniaceae species lacking a nectariferous functional disc is ascribed to trichomatic glands around the ovary base and/or on the inner corolla wall. Nevertheless, knowledge about the secretion and function of these glands is very incomplete. The purpose of this paper is to study, from a developmental viewpoint, the ultrastructure, histochemistry and secretory process of the peltate trichomes on the ovary of Zeyheria montana, a species in the Bignoniaceae which has a rudimentary disc.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to see if using a Lanz pressure regulating valve on endotracheal tubes (ETT) could reduce tracheal damage in dogs during anesthesia with nitrous oxide (N2O).
  • Sixteen mixed-breed dogs were divided into two groups, one using a standard Rüsch ETT and the other using a Lanz ETT, with measurements taken before and during N2O administration.
  • Results showed that the Lanz group had lower cuff pressures and significantly less tracheal inflammation and damage compared to the Control group, suggesting the Lanz ETT is better at protecting the trachea.
