Laparoscopic ventral hernia repair (LVHR) is a widely practiced treatment for primary (PH) and incisional (IH) hernias, with acceptable outcomes. Prevention of recurrence is crucial and still highly debated. Purpose of this study was to evaluate predictive factors of recurrence following LVHR with intraperitoneal onlay mesh with a single type of mesh for both PH and IH.

Purpose: Few studies have examined school nurses preferences' for asthma training. Our purpose was to: 1) assess school nurses' perceived asthma training needs, 2) describe nurses' access to asthma educational resources, and 3) identify urban-rural differences in training needs and access to resources in southern states.

Design And Methods: A convenience sample of school nurses (n=162) from seven counties (two urban and five rural) in North Carolina and South Carolina completed an online, anonymous survey.

Few studies have examined the use of prescription opioids in schools. The current study aimed to: (1) describe the context within which school nurses encounter student opioid prescriptions; (2) assess school nurses' preferences for training and student education; and (3) explore urban-rural differences in school nurses' experiences and training preferences. A convenience sample of school nurses (n = 633) from North Carolina and South Carolina participated in a brief, anonymous, online survey.

Unlabelled: Our purpose was to test whether a tailored inhaler technique video intervention: (1) could be feasibly implemented by school nurses and (2) improve the inhaler technique of children with asthma.

Methods: School nurses recruited a convenience sample of 25 children with asthma (ages 7-17) and assessed their inhaler technique. Children then watched a tailored video that provided: (1) step-by-step feedback on which steps (out of 8) they performed correctly, (2) praise for correctly-performed steps, and (3) statements about why incorrectly-performed steps are important.

Road safety education is considered essential to teach children to interact with traffic safely. Many programs, however, do not consider the separate component skills of the road-crossing task, the functional and behavioural factors that may put some children at increased risk, and the most beneficial methods to transfer knowledge to improved behaviour in real-world environments. A targeted and practical training program using a simulated road environment has been developed and evaluated amongst primary school children using a randomised controlled trial.

The authors report on their experience with the treatment of 34 consecutive patients suffering from perforated peptic ulcer with peritonitis. All patients has been treated by the laparoscopic approach using sutures according to the Graham-Steele technique and omental plication. Irrigation, suction of the entire abdominal cavity with isotonic sodium chloride solution and drainage completed the procedure.

Background: The study aims to evaluate the efficacy of resorbable clips in polydioxanone in laparoscopic surgery.

Methods: The authors report their personal experience regarding the use of Absolok (ABL) resorbable clips in laparoscopic surgery. Out of a total of 745 laparoscopic operations performed from September 1992 to February 1997, 438 included the use of resorbable clips in place of metal clips, both for cystic duct section during cholecystectomy and vascular structures, or to lock continuous sutures.

Described here is a case of constriction of the ileal loop caused by a volvulus forming on an internal hernia through the mesenteric opening in the anastomotic colonic stumps, following left laparoscopic-assisted hemicolectomy. This experience indicates the need for closure of mesenteric gaps with a continuous suture after laparoscopic-assisted left hemicolectomy.

Three cases of posttraumatic splenic laceration in young patients are reported. In each case, hemostasis of the lesion was obtained by the use of microfiber collagen in emergency laparoscopy. In two cases, complete hemostasis was achieved and the entire organ was saved.

The Authors present cases of groin hernioplasty using the Shouldice method; the method used for more than six years, such as elective technique to treat groin hernia, is evaluated on the basis of results of complications and recurrences. A careful clinical check of patients operated on over one year at least, allows confirmation of the efficiency of the method, because it results in a low percentage of recurrence and complications, plus a low social and economical cost. For these reasons it is proposed that the method is applied in day surgery.

This is a report on 108 cases collected from 1970 to 1987, in the same department, of surgically-detected pancreatic abscesses or pus-harboring collections. The purulent areas were either of a spreading pattern or represented a clearly localized mass. To the spreading pattern belong 47 cases of necrotizing pancreatitis, without discontinuity in the clinical course from the early toxic to the late septic phase, 4 cases of acute pancreatitis, initially in remission and later complicated by septic collections, and 4 cases which developed after an acute attack of chronic pancreatitis.

The authors describe an original surgical technique for pancreatic transplantation carried out on an experimental rat model which duplicates as closely as possible the anatomic-functional situation of a pancreatic graft in man (one arterovenous vascular peduncle with one functioning kidney only). The technique entails a microanastomosis between the mesenteric artery and the portal vein of the donor organ with the left renal artery and vein of the recipient. This method appears to be technically encouraging and particularly useful in studying the early phases of ischemic graft injuries, a field in which the authors are particularly interested.

The authors report the results of a 6-8 year follow-up of 42 patients treated by selective proximal vagotomy with pyloroplasty for gastric or duodenal ulcer disease. On the basis of Visick's classification, the patients broke down into the following categories: Cat. 1: 66.
