The Finnish Archipelago Sea (AS) has long been subject to intensive anthropogenic phosphorus (P) loading. The area suffers from seasonal hypoxia and cyanobacterial blooms despite reductions in nutrient discharge from the catchment and point sources. Internal loading may even dominate the P budget.
