Objective: Bloodstream infections (BSIs) caused by carbapenem-resistant (CRKP) are a serious threat to public health. In this study, it was aimed to evaluate the risk factors, treatment, length of hospitalisation and mortality of patients with BSI caused by CRKP.

Methods: Between October 2021 and October 2023, patients aged 18 years and older who were treated for BSI at Mersin University Faculty of Medicine Hospital and had pathogens identified as CRKP or carbapenem-sensitive (CSKP) were retrospectively reviewed and included in the study.

Purpose: To investigate the factors affecting disease specific mortality (DSM) in patients with mucormycosis.

Methods: This retrospective study included 24 patients diagnosed with mucormycosis and who had undergone surgical and medical treatment between 2010 and 2020. There were 14 male and 10 female patients whose mean age was 53.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on the impact of brucellosis in pregnant women, highlighting that it is linked to various obstetric complications, yet there is limited data on human cases.
  • Data was gathered from 242 pregnant women diagnosed with brucellosis across 23 hospitals over a 14-year period, revealing that 14.0% experienced obstetric complications, with spontaneous abortion being the most common at 6.1%.
  • Key factors related to obstetric complications included symptoms like splenomegaly, nausea, and anemia, emphasizing the need for investigation in pregnant women who show such signs, especially in endemic areas.

This study aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial effects of the medicinal plant Ecballium elaterium, which is topically applied as a traditional medicine for the treatment of rhinosinusitis. Pure and extract forms of E elaterium were applied to the nasal cavity of rats for the treatment of Streptococcus-pneumoniae -induced rhinosinusitis. The nasal mucosa, soft palate, and trachea of the rats were harvested in the first hour, third day, and third week for histopathologic evaluation.

Purpose: Recent study showed that patients with acromegaly have typical skin findings including increased sebum secretion, decreased transepidermal water loss, more alkaline, and colder skin surface correlated with serum growth hormone and insulin-like growth factor 1 levels. Different anatomic localizations and texture of the skin differ in bacterial concentrations.Nasal carriage of Staphylococcus aureus and axillar flora in patients with acromegaly was compared with normal population with regard to duration of acromegaly as well as the growth hormone and insulin-like growth factor 1 levels.

Objective: Neuroimaging abnormalities in central nervous system (CNS) brucellosis are not well documented. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of imaging abnormalities in neurobrucellosis and to identify factors associated with leptomeningeal and basal enhancement, which frequently results in unfavorable outcomes.

Methods: Istanbul-3 study evaluated 263 adult patients with CNS brucellosis from 26 referral centers and reviewed their 242 magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and 226 computerized tomography (CT) scans of the brain.

Background Context: No direct comparison between brucellar spondylodiscitis (BSD) and tuberculous spondylodiscitis (TSD) exists in the literature.

Purpose: This study aimed to compare directly the clinical features, laboratory and radiological aspects, treatment, and outcome data of patients diagnosed as BSD and TSD.

Study Design: A retrospective, multinational, and multicenter study was used.

Background: The Thwaites and Lancet scoring systems have been used in the rapid diagnosis of tuberculous meningitis (TBM). However, brucellar meningoencephalitis (BME) has similar characteristics with TBM. The ultimate aim of this study is to infer data to see if BME should be included in the differential diagnosis of TBM when these two systems suggest the presence of TBM.

Data in the literature regarding the factors that predict unfavorable outcomes in adult herpetic meningoencephalitis (HME) cases are scarce. We conducted a multicenter study in order to provide insights into the predictors of HME outcomes, with special emphasis on the use and timing of antiviral treatment. Samples from 501 patients with molecular confirmation from cerebrospinal fluid were included from 35 referral centers in 10 countries.

Predicting unfavorable outcome is of paramount importance in clinical decision making. Accordingly, we designed this multinational study, which provided the largest case series of tuberculous meningitis (TBM). 43 centers from 14 countries (Albania, Croatia, Denmark, Egypt, France, Hungary, Iraq, Italy, Macedonia, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, Syria, Turkey) submitted data of microbiologically confirmed TBM patients hospitalized between 2000 and 2012.

Acinetobacter baumannii is characterized by a rapid development of resistance to the commonly used antimicrobial agents. We investigated the risk factors, clinical features, and outcomes in ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) caused by extensive drug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (XDRAB). Clinical parameters and overall in-hospital mortality rates were compared between the VAP with and without XDRAB infection groups.

Objective: Direct rigid laryngoscopy (DRL) is a relatively simple and well-tolerated procedure that can provide both diagnostic and therapeutic benefits. There are no data regarding the risk of acquiring bacteremia after DRL. The purpose of this prospective study was to assess the frequency of bacteremia and nosocomial colonization following DRL and to identify possible risk factors for the development of these complications.

Mucormycosis is a life-threatening fungal infection that occurs in immunocompromised patients. The most common predisposing risk factor for mucormycosis is diabetes mellitus. Rhino-orbito-cerebral mucormycosis is the most common form in diabetic patients and is characterized by paranasal sinusitis, ophthalmoplegia with blindness, and unilateral proptosis with cellulitis, facial pain with swelling, headache, fever, rhinitis, granular or purulent nasal discharge, nasal ulceration, epistaxis, hemiplegia or stroke, and decreased mental function.

Background: We performed a prospective observational cohort study to evaluate the causative bacteria and to identify risk factors for mortality in febrile neutropenic (FN) patients with blood stream infection (BSI).

Material/methods: We conducted a prospective data collection on all patients with bacteremia or fungemia. The patients were assigned into low-risk and high-risk groups in accordance with the Multinational Association for Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC) Risk Index.
