Effects of Various Laser Treatments on Surface Characterization and Repair Bond Strength of Zirconia-Reinforced Lithium Silicate Ceramics.

Purpose: To evaluate the effects of two different lasers and their use in combination with hydrofluoric acid (HF) etching on the surface roughness of zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate (ZLS) ceramics and their shear bond strength (SBS) to composite resin.

Materials And Methods: The five study groups were as follows: (1) Group H = HF etching; (2) Group N = Nd:YAG (neodymium: yttrium-aluminum-garnet) laser; (3) Group NH = Nd:YAG laser + HF gel; (4) Group E = Er:YAG (erbium: yttrium-aluminum-garnet) laser; and (5) Group EH = Er:YAG laser + HF gel. Surface roughness was assessed using a noncontact profilometer, and SBS tests were conducted with a universal testing machine.

Background: In this study, we aimed to examine the impact of fasting during the month of Ramadan on autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (-ADPKD) patients with normal to near-normal glomerular filtration rate (GFR).

Materials And Methods: This was a prospective observational study of patients with ADPKD, the majority of whom had normal or near-normal GFR. Patients were divided into two groups: the fasting group (FG) and the nonfasting group (NFG).

Endocan and albuminuria in type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Background: Endocan is a newly identified proteoglycan released from endothelium, stimulating angiogenesis and when increased, indicates endothelial activation (inflammation). Our aim was to examine the association between serum endocan levels and urine albumin-creatinine ratio (UACR).

Method: One hundred and thirty-seven patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and normal serum creatinine who had no co-morbidities other than hypertension, diabetic nephropathy, retinopathy, or neuropathy were divided into normoalbuminuria (G1), microalbuminuria (G2), and macroalbuminuria (G3) groups and compared cross-sectionally regarding serum endocan levels.

Background: High blood pressure is still a challenge for emergency physicians to discern the patients that require further analysis to establish the existence of acute hypertensive target organ damage (TOD). The present study aimed to reveal that adropin levels are useful for detecting TOD in patients presenting with high blood pressure.

Methods: Patients presenting with a blood pressure of more than 180/110 mm Hg were enrolled into the study.

Burning mouth syndrome: Evaluation of clinical and laboratory findings.

Background And Purpose: Burning mouth syndrome is a chronic and persistent painful condition characterized by burning sensation in the oral mucosa. We investigated the etiological factors of patients presented with the history of burning in the mouth who admitted our outpatient clinics over the 8-years period and who had no underlying identifiable local factors. We also tried to determine their demographic and clinical characteristics.

Methods: The cross-sectional case-control study was conducted at Bezmialem Vakif University, Istanbul, Turkey, between September 2013 and April 2014, and comprised heterozygous beta thalassemia patients who were compared with 41 gender-, age- and body mass index-matched controls for platelet function markers. The two groups were also compared for co-morbidities, smoking, and regular medications.

Introduction: All findings of preeclampsia appear as the clinical consequences of diffuse endothelial dysfunction. Soluble tumor necrosis factor-like weak inducer of apoptosis (sTWEAK) was recently introduced as a TNF related cytokine in various inflammatory and noninflammatory disorders. sTWEAK was found to be related to endothelial dysfunction in patients with chronic kidney disease.

Objective: To investigate bone resorption and formation markers as well as bone mineral density in women with restless legs syndrome (RLS).

Methods: This was a prospective cross-sectional case-control study involving drug-naive women with RLS and age- and body mass index (BMI)-matched female controls. Routine blood analyses, markers of bone formation, procollagen 1 n-terminal peptide, bone resorption, c-telopeptide of type 1 collagen (CTX), sclerostin, and bone mineral density (BMD) were compared between the 2 groups.

A complex metabolic disease, type 2 diabetes affects multiple different tissues, demanding a "systems medicine" approach to biomarker and novel diagnostic discovery, not to mention data integration across omics-es. In the present study, transcriptomics data from different tissues including beta-cells, pancreatic islets, arterial tissue, peripheral blood mononuclear cells, liver, and skeletal muscle of 228 samples were integrated with protein-protein interaction data and genome scale metabolic models to unravel the molecular and tissue-specific biomarker signatures of type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Objectives: We investigated whether pomegranate extract plays a protective antioxidant role against mesenteric ischemia-reperfusion injury (IR), which can lead to a systemic response and damage distant organs, such as the lung, liver, and kidney.

Methods: Forty female Wistar-Albino rats were separated into four groups: laparotomy, laparotomy + PG, mesenteric IR, and mesenteric IR and pomegranate (IR + PG). In the laparotomy + PG and IR + PG groups, pomegranate (225 mg/kg) was given by oral gavage at the beginning of the study.
