Comorbid conditions as predictors of mortality in severe COPD - an eight-year follow-up cohort study.

Purpose: Co-morbidities are common in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and are associated with increased morbidity and mortality. The aim of the present study was to explore the prevalence of several comorbid conditions in severe COPD, and to investigate and compare their associations with long-term mortality.

Methods: In May 2011 to March 2012, 241 patients with COPD stage 3 or 4 were included in the study.

Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis in elderly Icelanders and its association with the metabolic syndrome: the AGES-Reykjavik Study.

: To describe the prevalence of diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) in a large population-based study of elderly Icelanders, with particular reference to weight-related factors and the metabolic syndrome.: The study population comprised 5321 participants aged 68-96 years (2276 males, mean ± sd age 76 ± 5 , and 3045 females, age 77 ± 6) from the AGES-Reykjavik Study. DISH diagnosis was based on computed tomography (CT) scans, and interpreted strictly by the Resnick criteria and additional suggestions for CT interpretation by Oudkerk et al.

[Learning methods in general practice].

The Swedish Association of General Practice has published a set of guidelines for general practitioner's (GPs') learning in general practice/family medicine. This article is a summary of principles, guidelines and applications regarding Swedish GPs' continuing professional development (CPD). We argue that reflection on own practice, reflection with colleagues in small groups and use of written learning plans and portfolios for courses and lectures are important parts of CPD and should be increasingly used and supported by employers.

Incremental clinical utility of continuous performance tests in childhood ADHD - an evidence-based assessment approach.

Despite extensive research on attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), there are still uncertainties regarding the clinical utility of different ADHD assessment methods. This study aimed to examine the incremental clinical utility of Conners' continuous performance test (CPT) II and QbTest in diagnostic assessments and treatment monitoring of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Retrospective data from child and adolescent psychiatric records of two populations were studied.

The use of digital photographs for the diagnosis of hand osteoarthritis: the AGES-Reykjavik study.

Background: The objective of the study was to standardize a method using digital photographs to diagnose and grade hand osteoarthritis (HOA), to compare it with radiographs and clinical examination with regard to prevalence and relation to symptoms, and finally to construct a simple shortened version suitable for use in very large studies, where a global estimate may be preferable.

Methods: High quality photographs with standard distance and hand positioning were analysed for the presence of HOA and subsequently compared with standard radiographs and clinical examination in 381 random participants in the AGES-Reykjavik Study, a large population study. The mean age of the participants was 76 years.

High hand joint mobility is associated with radiological CMC1 osteoarthritis: the AGES-Reykjavik study.

Objective: Previous studies have indicated that joint hypermobility may affect the development of clinical and radiological hand osteoarthritis (OA), but this question has not been addressed in epidemiological studies. Our objective was to investigate this relationship in a population-based study.

Patients And Methods: The study group consisted of 384 unselected older participants in the Age, Gene/Environment Susceptibility-Reykjavik Study (161 males, median age 76, range 69-90, and 223 females median age 75, range 69-92).

Hand radiology characteristics of patients carrying the T(303)M mutation in the gene for matrilin-3.

Objective: To determine whether the recently described hand osteoarthritis (HOA)-associated T(303)M mutation in the gene for matrilin-3 (MATN3) is associated with specific radiological changes on hand radiographs.

Method: Standard hand radiographs from 26 HOA patients carrying the T(303)M missense mutation in the MATN3 gene (T(303)M patients) were compared with those from 52 HOA controls matched for sex, age, and clinical disease severity. Two blinded readers scored the radiographs, using the Verbruggen-Veys anatomical scoring system for the interphalangeal and metacarpophalangeal joints and the OARSI atlas scoring system for the first carpometacarpal (CMC1) joints.

Blood lines conduct leakage current during haemodialysis: a potential safety risk during first failure, especially for patients with central dialysis catheter as access.

Haemodialysis (HD) machines are IEC-classified as I type B. When central dialysis catheters (CDCs) are used for access, there will be close electrical contact with the heart. To investigate the risk for HD patients, the leakage of current through the tubing set was measured during in vitro dialysis performed according to the IEC 60601-1 standard for class I cardiac floating (CF) devices.

Patients' views on interpersonal continuity in primary care: a sense of security based on four core foundations.

Background: A deep and comprehensive understanding of what patients value about having a personal doctor in primary care is lacking.

Objectives: To acquire a comprehensive understanding of the core values of having a personal doctor in a continuing doctor-patient relationship in primary care among long-term, chronically ill patients.

Method: In this qualitative study, 14 chronically ill patients at three primary health care centres were strategically selected.
