Pars plana vitrectomy combined with phacoemulsification versus pars plana vitrectomy only for treatment of phakic rhegmatogenous retinal detachment: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Purpose: To compare the visual, refractive, and anatomical outcomes and incidence of complications between combined pars plana vitrectomy and phacoemulsification (phacovitrectomy) versus pars plana vitrectomy (PPV-only) in phakic eyes with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD).

Methods: Two independent reviewers searched MEDLINE, Cochrane Central, and Web of Science to identify relevant articles. Prospective or retrospective studies comparing PPV-only and phacovitrectomy for RRD were included.

Pushed monocanalicular intubation versus probing for the treatment of simple and incomplete complex types of congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction in children older than 18 months old.

This article compares the success rate of pushed monocanalicular intubation (Masterka) versus probing for the treatment of congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction (CNLDO) in children older than 18 months. In a non-random comparative study, 90 eyes with CNLDO underwent either Masterka (45 eyes) or probing (45 eyes). All procedures were performed by one oculoplastic surgeon.

Femtosecond laser-assisted sutureless anterior lamellar keratoplasty for superficial corneal opacities.

Purpose: To evaluate the visual and refractive outcomes, endothelial cell count (ECC), ocular surface changes, corneal aberrations, and biomechanical profile changes after femtosecond laser-assisted anterior lamellar keratoplasty surgery for superficial corneal scars.

Setting: Farabi Eye Hospital, Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran.

Serum hyaluronic acid and laminin as potential tumor markers for upper gastrointestinal cancers.

Background: Early diagnosis of patients with upper gastrointestinal cancer is important because many cases are diagnosed in advanced stages and have poor prognosis. Several studies have reported increased serum levels of hyaluronic acid and laminin in various cancers and the correlation of the levels with poor prognosis. However, little data on the use of serum hyaluronic acid and laminin levels for early detection of esophageal and gastric cancers are available.

Prognostic factors for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma--a population-based study in Golestan Province, Iran, a high incidence area.

Golestan Province in northern Iran is an area with a high incidence of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). We aimed to investigate prognostic factors for ESCC and survival of cases in Golestan, on which little data were available. We followed-up 426 ESCC cases participating in a population-based case-control study.

Coeliac disease in autoimmune liver disease: a cross-sectional study and a systematic review.

Background: Several studies have reported an association between coeliac disease and autoimmune liver disease, but there is little information on the prevalence of coeliac disease in certain autoimmune liver diseases, particularly from non-European, non-American countries.

Aims: To investigate prevalence of coeliac disease in autoimmune liver disease in Iran and to summarize previous literature.

Methods: We investigated prevalence of coeliac disease among 100 autoimmune liver disease patients and compared it with the prevalence in healthy individuals.
