Pre-existing femoral or tibial extra-articular fracture deformity may adversely affect the results of total knee arthroplasty (TKA). This deformity can be addressed with asymmetrical intra-articular resection or with correctional osteotomy performed prior to or at the time of primary TKA. Careful preoperative planning obviates many potential problems that can occur at the time of surgery with correction of many complex deformities.

Background Context: Steinert syndrome is described as an autosomal dominant condition characterized by progressive muscular wasting, myotonia, musculoskeletal manifestations and rare spinal defects. Little is reported about spinal deformity associated with this syndrome.

The authors present a 45-year-old man with bone marrow edema syndrome (BMES) of the medial condyle of the knee. Early diagnosis of BMES was based upon clinical, bone scintigraphy and magnetic resonance (MRI) findings. After failure of the conservative treatment, core decompression was performed.
