Background: Oncoplastic breast surgery is more likely to achieve superior aesthetic outcomes compared to lumpectomy alone. Oncoplastic reduction mammoplasty (ORM) is a volume displacement oncoplastic technique that combines lumpectomy and reduction mammoplasty. Data on aesthetic and quality-of-life (QoL) outcomes after ORM are scarce in the literature.

However, there has yet to be a formal analysis of this approach. The goal of this study was to evaluate sensory recovery after neurotized abdominally based free flaps for breast reconstruction using the authors' novel technique and analyze factors that could affect sensory recovery.

This study aims to evaluate the effect of the ADM surgical complications, breast aesthetics, and patient satisfaction.
Methods: In a tertiary hospital, patients that underwent implant-based breast reconstructions during a three-year period had their charts retrospectively reviewed, received post-operative BreastQ, and had their post-operative photos evaluated by a three-member panel using a multi-parameter breast specific scale (scored 1-5).
The hypermetabolic state of patients with ≥20% total body surface area (TBSA) causes loss of muscle mass and compromised immune function with delayed wound healing. Weight loss is most severe in patients with ≥20% TBSA with initial weight gain due to fluid resuscitation. The American Burn Association (ABA) proposed quality measures for burn injury admissions, including weight loss from admission to discharge.

Third-party observers provide an independent assessment of aesthetic outcomes. Factors associated with disparity between patient and observer perceptions of outcomes are not well understood.

The need for a comprehensive, validated tool to evaluate breast aesthetics independently from the patient motivated this study.
Methods: The 13-item Validated Breast Aesthetic Scale was developed after several internal meetings, and worded to be understood by a nonspecialist.
Burn survivors are at risk for dissatisfaction with body image, relationships, and sexuality due to disfiguring changes secondary to the injury. This review compares available global data on BSHS-B psychosocial scores. Twenty-four studies were included in the final analysis encompassing 14 countries; significant differences were found in scores across all BSHS-B psychological sub-sections of affect, body image, interpersonal relationships, and sexuality.

There is no consensus on pain management for burn patients with a history of drug usage. Our aim was to study the association of previous drug addiction and the treatment of acute burn patients, focusing on daily morphine milligram equivalent (MME) requirements and outcomes.

This study compares once versus twice daily dressing changes with SSD, focusing on development of wound infections, incidence of hospital acquired complications, patient pain scores, and length of stay. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether a once-daily or twice-daily application of SSD impacts burn wound healing outcomes.

The retained nipple may act as a portal or nidus for different ductal organisms, and as such, the bacteriology of surgical-site infections (SSIs) in this setting may not be adequately covered by current antibiotic recommendations. This study sought to evaluate SSI and reconstruction outcomes in relation to antibiotic choice and identify the different microbial species implicated.

Introduction: The use of acellular dermal matrix (ADM) for breast reconstruction continues to change in both single- and two-stage reconstruction. Determining optimal outcomes clinically, aesthetically, financially as well as for the patient's quality of life has become a priority.
Methods: A retrospective review of implant-based reconstructions was performed at a single center from 2010 to 2016, with patients blindly matched 1:1:1 into three cohorts based on reconstruction type: 1) single stage direct to implant with ADM, 2) two-stage tissue expander to implant (TE/I) without ADM, and 3) two-stage TE/I with ADM.
Background: Despite advances in skin envelope reduction techniques and experienced nipple-sparing mastectomy flap procedures, the rate of nipple malposition and secondary revision in these patients remains high and eligible candidates are limited. In this article, the authors present a novel technique combining skin reduction nipple-sparing mastectomy surgery with single-stage skin-only mastopexy and direct-to-implant reconstruction.
Methods: A retrospective review was performed at a single institution from 2015 to 2018.
Background Managing indeterminate-depth burn wounds remains challenging. Laser Doppler Imaging (LDI) has been validated for burn wound depth and can influence the clinical assessment. Our study investigated the value of LDI as an adjunct in determining the need for excision.

Long-term results have been demonstrated in patients with minimal, mild, and moderate skin excess. It relies on the skin's unique ability to contract once separated from its attachments and further enhances the surgical result with treatment of the intermediate layer- subplatysmal fat, anterior digastric, submandibular gland, and platysma.

Ex vivo normothermic perfusion is a novel approach to prolong the viability of the amputated limbs by maintaining physiologic cellular metabolism. This study aimed to evaluate the outcomes of extended ex vivo normothermic limb perfusion (EVNLP) in preserving the viability of amputated limbs for over 24 hours.

Methods: Patients who underwent breast reconstruction between 2009 and 2011 were included.
Introduction: Patients who have previously undergone superficial parotidectomy may also seek facelift surgery for facial aging and rejuvenation. These patients present unique challenges compared to a standard facelift patient. Most concerning is the location of facial nerve branches, which may be superficial and displaced.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: Masculinization of the face is a common finding in facelift patients. It is attributed to deflation and decent of the midface-jowls coupled with skin laxity. Fullness is evident lateral to the jowl in a small percentage due to prominent buccal fat pad (BFP).

Background: Use of drains has been advocated in order to prevent seroma and hematoma; however, specific recommendations vary widely. The goal is to perform a systematic analysis of published literature on the use of drains for breast reconstruction.
Methods: The literature search was performed according to the PRISMA guidelines.
Background: Fat grafting is a powerful and increasingly used technique in breast reconstruction. However, fat necrosis can lead to palpable postoperative changes that can induce anxiety and lead to unplanned diagnostic studies. The authors' aim in this study was to evaluate the incidence, type, and timing of these unanticipated studies; the specialty of the ordering provider; and the factors that trigger the ordering process.

This is supplemented with clarifying anatomic dissections and artwork figures whenever possible to enable easy, sound, and safe navigation during surgery. The historic milestones that led the evolution of cervicofacial rejuvenation to the art we know today are summarized at the beginning, and the pearls of the relevant facial analysis that permit accurate clinical judgment and hence individualized treatment strategies are highlighted at the end.

Background: Although the literature is replete with favorable facelift results, there are few validated facial rejuvenation outcome measures. Apparent age (AA), a visual estimate of age by objective observers, has been utilized in several studies; although attractive, AA lacks validation.
Objective: The aim of this study is to examine the reliability of AA, highlighting the importance of the exclusive use of validated outcome measures in future studies.
Background: Ischemia time represents a significant limitation for successful extremity transplantation because of the rapid deterioration of ischemic muscle. Normothermic ex-situ preservation is an emergent method to prolong the organ viability following procurement, by replicating the physiologic conditions. The aim of this study was to develop an ex-situ normothermic limb perfusion system to preserve the viability and function of porcine limbs for 12 hours following procurement.
