Vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) is a common infection of the genital tract affecting millions of women worldwide. Data on epidemiological trends of VVC in Greece are scarce. This study was undertaken to evaluate the prevalence of VVC among symptomatic women in Crete, Greece, identify the Candida species involved and determine their susceptibility to antifungals.

Appropriate empirical antimicrobial treatment is necessary to achieve an optimal therapeutic outcome. This study evaluated the prevalence and the antimicrobial susceptibility of Mycoplasma hominis and Ureaplasma spp.

Methods: Twenty-three (15 nonsmokers and eight smokers) healthy, elite male professional soccer players (mean age: 25.2±4.
Background/aims: Factor V Leiden heterozygosity occurs in 3-8% of the general European and US populations. Activated protein C resistance (APC-R)--a non-molecular laboratory test--can efficiently demonstrate the presence of this mutation and can be performed on most coagulation analyzers. On the other hand, fistula or graft thrombosis is a common and costly complication in hemodialysis patients.

Methods: All P. aeruginosa isolates collected from patients with nosocomial infections were processed and cultured according to routine methods.
During a 5-y period (2003 - 2007), nocardial infections were diagnosed in 15 patients admitted to the University Hospital of Heraklion, Crete, Greece. Nine patients (60%) had 1 or more underlying conditions predisposing to nocardiosis. The skin was involved in 10 cases, followed by the lung in 4.

Epidemiological studies concerning dermatophyte infections have been performed in many countries and differences in the incidence and the aetiological agents have been reported in different geographical locations. This study was undertaken to investigate the prevailing species of dermatophytes in the island of Crete, Greece, and their pattern of infection during a 7-year period (1997-2003).

Background: Nocardia brasiliensis is a rare human pathogen usually associated with localized cutaneous infections.
Case Presentation: We report a case of primary lymphocutaneous Nocardia brasiliensis infection developed after a bone fracture of the left hand of an otherwise healthy 32-year-old man. Treatment with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole given for a total of three months combined with surgical debridement resulted in complete resolution of the infection.
