A representative number of decalin and hydrindane derivatives - were prepared in 11-91% yield by means of a cascade reaction of cyclohexanone/cyclopentanone enolates and methyl acrylate through a Michael-Michael ring closure (MIMIRC) process. The relative stereochemistry of the four stereogenic centers formed in all products was determined by analyzing the vicinal coupling constants from the H NMR and X-ray crystallography. Such a stereochemical outcome was corroborated by conformational analysis supported by DFT calculations and simulating the H NMR spectra of representative products.

In latter years, plant secondary metabolites have become of special interest because of their potential role in preventing and managing metabolic syndrome. Sesquiterpene lactones constitute a large and diverse group of biologically active compounds widely distributed in several medicinal plants used for the treatment of metabolic disorders.

A number of representative nucleophilic additions (RMgX and RLi) on 2 afforded α-ketoacetals 3a-j in 70-99% yield. These compounds represent a versatile arrangement of functional groups of significant synthetic value, as demonstrated in the synthesis of (±)-salbutamol.

Oxidative hydrolysis of 12a,c,e, followed by LiAlH4 reduction of the resulting mixture, gave 16a,c,e in >95% ee,16c being a key precursor for the preparation of fungicide 17. The absolute configuration of 9 and 12j (Nu = H) was established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses and chemical correlation.
