Several antiphospholipid antibody (aPL) profiles ("triple" and lupus anticoagulant [LA] positivity) are associated with a higher risk for clinical manifestations of antiphospholipid syndrome (APS). Further risk is correlated with higher levels of anticardiolipin antibody (aCL) and anti-β glycoprotein-I antibody (aβGPI), and with aPL persistence. Given that the 3 aPL tests detect partially overlapping sets of antibodies, the primary goal of this study was to characterize the associations among aPL tests using AntiPhospholipid Syndrome Alliance for Clinical Trials and InternatiOnal Networking (APS ACTION) core laboratory data.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is associated with a high rate of thrombosis. Prolonged activated partial thromboplastin times (aPTT) and antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL) are reported in COVID-19 patients. The majority of publications have not reported whether patients develop clinically relevant persistent aPL, and the clinical significance of new aPL-positivity in COVID-19 is currently unknown.

Objective: The risk of thrombotic events is elevated in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) compared to the general population and has been attributed to both systemic inflammation and to the presence of antiphospholipid antibodies (aPLs). Our objective was to examine differences in aPL prevalence in White and African American patients with SLE and venous thromboembolic (VTE) events, and to compare inflammatory markers at the time of a VTE event.

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a rare disease entity characterized by histiocyte infiltration of various organ systems with abroad spectrum of clinical manifestations and prognosis, ranging from benign and self-limiting to lethal. We report a case of a healthy 29-year-old male who presented with upper back pain that was unresponsive to over-the-counter analgesics. The painwas eventually attributed to a single lytic lesion at the posterolateral aspect of his seventh rib, consistent with LCH of the bone.

Secondary causes of minimal change disease (MCD) account for a minority of cases compared to its primary or idiopathic form and provide ground for consideration of common mechanisms of pathogenesis. In this paper we report a case of a 27-year-old Latina woman, a renal transplant recipient with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), who developed nephrotic range proteinuria 6 months after transplantation. The patient had recurrent acute renal failure and multiple biopsies were consistent with MCD.

Several studies in the last decade have highlighted the role of the type I interferon (IFN-I) pathway, and particularly interferon alpha (IFNα) in SLE pathogenesis. As a result, a multitude of potential treatments targeting IFNα have emerged in the last few years, a few of which have already completed phase II clinical trials. Some of the treatment strategies have focused on blocking IFNα or its receptor and others the plasmacytoid dendritic cell (pDC), which is the principal IFNα producing cell.

Choline (Ch) is an essential nutrient that seems to be involved in a wide variety of metabolic reactions and functions that affect the nervous system, while thioacetamide (TAA) is a well-known hepatotoxic agent. The induction of prolonged Ch-deprivation (CD) in rats receiving TAA (through the drinking water) provides an experimental model of mild progressive hepatotoxicity that could simulate commonly-presented cases in clinical practice.
