Acute-phase proteins (APPs) are biomarkers of systemic inflammation, which allow monitoring the response to surgery and post-operative complications. Ovariectomy (OVE) can be a useful model to evaluate surgical trauma and inflammation in feline species. The objective of this study was to evaluate and compare the acute-phase response (APR) after applying two different OVE techniques by measuring serum levels of serum amyloid A (SAA), haptoglobin (Hp), total serum proteins (TSPs), albumin (ALB), and paraoxonase-1 (PON-1) during the first 48 h post-surgery (hospital stay).

Androgens are produced in both sexes. In females produced by the adrenal gland and the ovaries they play a crucial role in regulating ovarian function, estrogen synthesis and follicular growth. Age leads to a reduction in androgen concentrations, although, at present, these mechanisms are not elucidated in mares.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the serum iron status and its relation to hematological indexes in cyclic mares. Blood samples were taken from 40 Spanish Purebred mares on days - 5, 0, + 5 and + 16 of their cycle. Concentration of transferrin (TRF) was significantly lower on day 0 than on days + 5 and + 16, transferrin saturation (TSAT) decreased significantly on days 0 and + 16 compared to day - 5, total iron-binding capacity (TIBC) on day + 16 was significantly higher than those on days - 5 and 0, and on day + 5 it was also significantly higher than that on day 0, unsaturated iron-binding capacity (UIBC) was reduced on day + 16 compared to days - 5 and 0, red blood cell (RBC) count on day + 16 was higher than that on days - 5 and 0 (p < 0.

Article Synopsis
  • Autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is proposed as a treatment to enhance tissue regeneration in FIV-positive cats due to its growth factors that can influence inflammatory cell behavior.
  • The study aimed to analyze the concentrations of platelets, erythrocytes, and leukocytes in whole blood versus PRP and measure specific growth factors (PDGF-BB and TGF-β1) in FIV-positive cats.
  • Results showed an increase in platelet concentration in PRP compared to whole blood, alongside a significant reduction in red and white blood cells, indicating the resulting product has high purity, even if it doesn't fully meet the PRGF®-Endoret® classification.

Background: Intra-articular (IA) combined with intra-osseous (IO) infiltration of plasma rich in growth factors (PRGF) have been proposed as an alternative approach to treat patients with severe osteoarthritis (OA) and subchondral bone damage. The aim of the study is to evaluate the efficacy of IO injections of PRGF to treat acute full depth chondral lesion in a rabbit model by using two histological validated scales (OARSI and ICRS II).

Methodology: A total of 40 rabbits were included in the study.

In recent years, several studies have been conducted on Muse cells mainly due to their pluripotency, high tolerance to stress, self-renewal capacity, ability to repair DNA damage and not being tumoral. Additionally, since these stem cells can be isolated from different tissues in the adult organism, obtaining them is not considered an ethical problem, providing an advantage over embryonic stem cells. Regarding their therapeutic potential, few studies have reported clinical applications in the treatment of different diseases, such as aortic aneurysm and chondral injuries in the mouse or acute myocardial infarction in the swine, rabbit, sheep and in humans.

Introduction: Intra-articular infiltration of plasma rich in growth factors (PRGF) and adipose mesenchymal stromal cells (AMSCs) are known to inhibit osteoarthritis progression. However, in severely affected patients, the treatment cannot reach the deeper layers of the articular cartilage; thus, its potential is limited. To overcome this limitation, intra-osseous infiltrations have been suggested.

The aim of this study was to monitor hematochemical changes during and after OHE in bitches. Twenty-four females were anesthetized with alfaxalone, midazolam, morphine and sevoflurane. Blood samples were taken before anesthesia (T0), at 30 (T1), and 60 min (T2), at 3 (T3), 6 (T4), 12 (T5), and 24 h (T6), and at 3 (T7) and 7 days (T8) from the start of surgery.

Objective: Intraarticular (IA) administration of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has been proposed as a new strategy to halt osteoarthritis (OA) progression. In patients with severe OA, its potential is limited because it is unable to reach the subchondral bone, so a new strategy is needed, and intraosseous (IO) infiltration has been suggested. The purpose is to assess the impact of IA together with IO infiltration of plasma rich in growth factors (PRGF) in serum hyaluronic acid (HA) and type II collagen cleavage neoepitope (C2C) levels.

Article Synopsis
  • Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common joint disease affecting 12% of people over 65, causing pain and decreased quality of life due to damage to cartilage and joints.
  • Conventional treatments, like medications and surgeries, often have significant risks and limitations, such as gastrointestinal and cardiac issues or poor cartilage regeneration.
  • New therapies, including mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and platelet-rich plasma (PRP), are gaining attention as potentially safer and more effective alternatives to traditional treatments for OA.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most significant joint diseases worldwide. There are different therapies for OA treatment, and a relatively new strategy is the use of plasma rich in growth factors (PRGF), a platelet rich plasma (PRP) derivative. The objective of this study was to objectively assess the efficacy and duration of the effect of an intraarticular injection of PRGF and a combination of PRGF + physical therapy.

Chronic musculoskeletal (MSK) pain is one of the most common medical complaints worldwide and musculoskeletal injuries have an enormous social and economical impact. Current pharmacological and surgical treatments aim to relief pain and restore function; however, unsatiscactory outcomes are commonly reported. In order to find an accurate treatment to such pathologies, over the last years, there has been a significantly increasing interest in cellular therapies, such as adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (AMSCs).

Background: The limb center of pressure (COP) path measures and quantifies the load distribution within a limb in a still or moving subject. Under this premise, the aim of this study was to test whether data derived from this parameter could detect the differences between sound and lame limbs in unilaterally lame dogs with elbow dysplasia. To accomplish this purpose, ten unilaterally lame dogs of similar conformation were walked over a pressure platform.

The role of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in promoting the healing of bone fractures has not yet been clearly stated. The aim of this prospective clinical study was to evaluate the effectiveness of plasma rich in growth factors (PRGF, a PRP derivate) in the treatment of naturally-occurring bone fractures in dogs. With this objective, sixty-five dogs with radius/ulna or tibia/fibula bone fractures were randomly divided into two groups (PRGF and saline solution (SS) groups) and checked at days 0, 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, 49, 56, 60, 63, 70, 120, and 180.

Low invasiveness is the main goal of modern surgery. The use of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is known to be effective in a variety of applications, such as oral, maxillofacial, orthopedic, dermatologic and cosmetic surgeries. However, a potential ergogenic and carcinogenic effect of PRP derivatives by means of the insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) pathway has been suggested.

Unlabelled: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a major cause of disability in elderly population around the world. More than one-third of people over 65 years old shows either clinical or radiological evidence of OA. There is no effective treatment for this degenerative disease, due to the limited capacity for spontaneous cartilage regeneration.
