Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the prevalence of transthyretin cardiac amyloidosis (ATTR-CA) in patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) due to severe aortic stenosis (AS), noting that detection is often challenging among this group.
  • Out of 107 patients evaluated, 6 were confirmed to have ATTR-CA, resulting in a prevalence rate of 7.1%, with ATTR-CA patients being older and exhibiting more severe heart and kidney damage compared to those without the condition.
  • The research highlights unique ECG features, such as bifascicular block, that are significantly associated with dual pathology (both AS and ATTR-CA), indicating the need for improved detection methods in these patients.

Autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITD) are a heterogeneous group of disorders. They include, in particular, Graves' disease and Hashimoto's thyroiditis with a wide range of different functional status ranging from subclinical biochemical abnormalities to severe hyperthyroidism or severe hypothyroidism respectively. Furthermore, other conditions more frequently infectious or drug related can cause an immune reaction in the thyroid tissue.

Primary umbilical melanoma is rare tumor, representing about 5% of all umbilical malignancies. The lymphatic drainage from the tumor is challenging and can be to inguinal, axillary and retroperitoneal nodes. Dynamic and static lymphoscintigraphy with single-photon emission tomography/computed tomography (SPECT/CT) and sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) is a widely validated technique in patients with clinically localized melanoma to search for and quantify nodal spread of cutaneous melanoma.

The present review provides a description of recent advances in the field of functional imaging that takes advantage of the functional characteristics of thyroid neoplastic cells (such as radioiodine uptake and FDG uptake) and theragnostic approach of differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC). Physical and biological characteristics of available radiopharmaceuticals and their use with state-of-the-art technologies for diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of DTC patients are depicted. Radioactive iodine is used mostly with a therapeutic intent, while PET/CT with F-FDG emerges as a useful tool in the diagnostic management and complements the use of radioactive iodine.
