In polluted areas, birds can suffer from changes in diet composition and inferior food quality. It is unknown if pollution can desynchronize the phenology of birds and their prey, resulting in a mismatch between food demand and availability. For 2 years, we studied seasonal changes in the biomass of leaf-eating invertebrates and the timing of reproduction and breeding success of an insectivorous bird, the pied flycatcher, in an area heavily polluted by the Middle Ural copper smelter and in an unpolluted control area.
