Across social structures within society, including healthcare, power relations manifest according to gender, socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, and class influencing infection related healthcare access and health providing-behaviours. Therefore, accounting for sociocultural drivers, including gender, race, and class, and their influence on economic status can improve healthcare access and health-providing behaviours in infection prevention and control (IPC) as well as antibiotic use, which in turn helps mitigate the spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). This Wellcome funded research will investigate how and why the social determinants of health and economic status influence how people seek, experience, and provide healthcare for suspected or proven (bacterial) infections and how these factors influence antibiotic prescribing and use in South Africa (upper middle-income country) and India (lower middle-income country).

Introduction: Implementing occupation-based practice in low-resourced settings can be challenging especially when working with children with HIV/Aids whose daily occupation of play is often affected by their health condition and other contextual factors such as poverty or stigma.

Aim: The aim of this paper is to obtain consensus from experts on the content and application of a play-based intervention for children with HIV/Aids living in a low-resourced setting.

Methods: A Delphi study involving two rounds using an online survey format was conducted with experts from the field of child development, play and/or HIV/Aids.

Introduction: Although play has been used as a means to meet therapeutic goals by health care practitioners for a long time, there is a need to continuously review its conceptualisation and use in everyday practice to promote evidence-based practice. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the evidence on how the play of children with Special Health Care Needs (SHCN) is similar or different to that of typically developing children.

Methods: Guided by the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) statement, we conducted a comprehensive review across five electronic databases for all studies that compared how the play of children with SHCN was similar or different to that of typically developing children.

Introduction: Despite play being widely used in occupational therapy practice as a means and ends in intervention, no research has explored how the play of children with HIV/AIDS is affected. Therefore, the specific processes through which play can be used in therapy with children with HIV/AIDS remains underexplored, especially in low resourced settings. This study aims to compare the level of playfulness of children with HIV/AIDS to that of age and gender matched typically developing children living in the same low resourced community.

Background/aim: In South Africa, contextual factors have been identified as barriers to outdoor, unstructured play. The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and resulting progressive HIV encephalopathy (PHE) is a pandemic in this area, associated with development delays that are not addressed by highly active antiretroviral treatment (HAART). This study aimed to describe the playfulness in children with HIV and PHE on HAART living in challenging socioeconomic areas in South Africa aged 6 months to 8 years and to evaluate the feasibility and preliminary effectiveness of a play-informed, caregiver-implemented, home-based intervention (PICIHBI) for improving play.

Occupational consciousness refers to ongoing awareness of the dynamics of hegemony and recognition that dominant practices are sustained through what people do every day, with implications for personal and collective health. The emergence of the construct in post-apartheid South Africa signifies the country's ongoing struggle with negotiating long-standing dynamics of power that were laid down during colonialism, and maintained under black majority rule. Consciousness, a key component of the new terminology, is framed from post-colonial perspectives - notably work by Biko and Fanon - and grounded in the philosophy of liberation, in order to draw attention to continuing unequal intersubjective relations that play out through human occupation.

Background/aim: South Africa carries a high burden of alcohol abuse. The effects of maternal alcohol consumption during pregnancy are most pronounced in poor, rural communities. Earlier research suggests that children with prenatal alcohol exposure have poor social behaviour; however, to date, no research has investigated their playfulness.

Background: This study attempted to fill a gap in the published South African literature regarding newly qualified nurses' preparedness for and experience of role transition to a 1-year compulsory commitment of community service nurse.

Methods: Husserlian descriptive phenomenology, characterized by inductive extraction of units of meaning from transcribed audiotaped recordings, was used to establish the "essence" of the lived experience of role transition. Data were collected from eight participants through two semistructured individual interviews: in July 2011, 2 weeks before the start of community service, and in September 2011, 6 weeks after community service placement.
