Background: Surgical site infection (SSI) is a very common complication of emergency laparotomy and causes significant morbidity. The PICO device delivers negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) to closed incisions, with some studies suggesting a role for prevention of SSI in heterogenous surgical populations.
