Article Synopsis
  • * This research analyzed microRNA profiles in plasma samples from various patient groups, finding that specific microRNAs (miR-24 and miR-27a) could differentiate between serious and less severe cases of liver disease.
  • * The study suggests that miR-24 and miR-191, linked to inflammation and liver injury, could serve as important indicators of poor outcomes in liver disease, highlighting the need for more research on these microRNAs as potential biomarkers and treatment targets.

Focused ultrasound can be used to rapidly diagnose COVID-19 disease, assess disease severity, and inform management of COVID-19 and associated pathologies, reducing radiation exposure from other imaging modalities and minimizing spread of infection. Ultrasound examinations performed by trained nurses in the intensive care unit (ICU) enable more patients to receive these assessments. This case series evaluates the use of nurse-led focused cardiac and lung ultrasound for clinical management of ICU patients with COVID-19.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to analyze how echocardiographic measures, lab tests, and clinical traits relate to in-hospital mortality for COVID-19 patients in ICU settings across two major UK hospitals.
  • Conducted as a retrospective observational study, it included 300 patients who were assessed upon ICU admission over 16 weeks and measured outcomes, mainly focusing on mortality rates.
  • Findings showed that older age, severely low left ventricular ejection fraction, and increased levels of C reactive protein were significant risk factors for mortality, alongside other important echocardiographic and clinical indicators.

Background & Aims: Patients with liver disease may acquire substantial changes in their hemostatic system, which are most pronounced in patients who are critically ill. Changes in the quality of the fibrin clot in critically ill patients have not been studied in detail. Here we assessed markers of fibrin clot quality and effects of coagulation factor concentrates in patients with acutely decompensated (AD) cirrhosis and acute on chronic liver failure (ACLF).

Essentials Liver diseases are associated with profound hemostatic changes proportional to severity of illness. Hemostatic changes in acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) may in part reflect critical illness. Hemostatic changes in ACLF partly overlap with those in sepsis, with rebalanced hemostasis in both.

Preventing unplanned perioperative hypothermia is crucial. Thermal reflective blankets may reduce heat loss, promote normothermia, increase patient comfort, and decrease cotton blanket expenses. Our purpose was to determine whether a thermal reflective blanket plus one warmed cotton blanket provides better temperature control and thermal comfort than warmed cotton blankets only.

Incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD) is a common problem in older people. However, it is frequently misdiagnosed and poorly treated. There is often uncertainty about which product to use to prevent and treat IAD; the different types, brands and how to apply them.
