Current imaging tools for vestibular schwannoma.

Purpose Of Review: Of the tumors found in the cerebellopontine angle (CPA), vestibular schwannomas are by far the most common. Modern diagnostic imaging enables excellent visualization of the CPA and detection of very small tumors while optimizing patient comfort and time. This review addresses the current imaging tools available for diagnosis of vestibular schwannomas.

Novel Changes in Resident Education during a Pandemic: Strategies and Approaches to Maximize Residency Education and Safety.

 The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a reduction in surgical and clinical volume, which has altered the traditional training experience of the otolaryngology resident.  To describe the strategies we utilized to maximize resident education as well as ensure patient and staff safety during the pandemic.  We developed a system that emphasized three key elements.

Osteoradionecrosis of the Temporal Bone: An Evidence-Based Approach.

Objectives: To perform a systematic review evaluating etiologies, associated complications, and management of osteoradionecrosis of the temporal bone (ORNTB).

Methods: The authors searched the PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases for relevant literature. Patient demographics, etiologies, treatments, and other clinical characteristics were obtained.

Patient, disease, and outcome characteristics of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo with and without Meniere's disease.

Background: Meniere's disease (MD)-associated benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is complex and difficult to diagnose, and reports of its prevalence, pathologic features and outcomes are sparse and conflicting.

Objective: Report disease characteristics and outcomes associated with the presence of MD in patients with BPPV.

Materials/methods: A retrospective study of patients with BPPV between 2007 and 2017 at a single, high-volume institution.

Endolymphatic Sac Decompression With Intra-Sac Dexamethasone Injection in Menière's Disease.

Objective: Endolymphatic sac decompression surgery (ELSD) may be used to treat patients who have Menière's 's disease refractory to medical therapy. In this study, we investigated whether or not the injection of steroid into the endolymphatic sac at the time of ELSD provides additional benefit to patient outcomes.

Study Design: Randomized prospective single-blinded placebo-controlled study.

Recurrence in Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo: A Large, Single-Institution Study.

Objective: To report rates of recurrence in benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) and associated patient and disease factors.

Study Design: Retrospective chart review.

Setting: Single high-volume otology practice.

Management of Sigmoid Sinus Associated Pulsatile Tinnitus: A Systematic Review of the Literature.

Objectives: Although studies demonstrate 4 to 20% of patients with pulsatile tinnitus (PT) have associated sigmoid sinus anomalies, no consensus exists regarding optimal management. Our objective was to perform a systematic review exploring surgical and endovascular intervention of PT caused by sigmoid sinus anomalies.

Data Sources/extraction: A systematic review was performed using the Preferred Reporting Systems for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis guidelines for reporting of results, with a target population encompassing patients with PT and either sigmoid sinus diverticulum or sigmoid wall dehiscence.

Acquired External Auditory Canal Atresia: A Comparison of Acellular Dermal Matrix and Split-thickness Skin Grafting Techniques.

Objective: To describe the use of acellular dermal matrix (ADM) in the repair of acquired external auditory canal atresia (AEACA), and compare surgical results to AEACA repair by split-thickness skin grafting (STSG).

Study Design: Retrospective chart review.

Setting: Neurotology clinical practice.

Beautiful Surfaces. Style and Substance in Florentius Schuyl's Illustrations for Descartes' Treatise on Man.

The assumption that the Cartesian bête-machine is the invention of René Descartes (1596-1650) is rarely contested. Close examination of Descartes' texts proves that this is a concept founded not on the basis of his own writings, but a subsequent critical interpretation, which developed and began to dominate his work after his death. Descartes' Treatise on Man, published posthumously in two rival editions, Florentius Schuyl's Latin translation De Homine (1662), and Claude Clerselier's Traité de l'homme, has proved particularly problematic.

Acoustic Reflex Screening of Conductive Hearing Loss for Third Window Disorders.

Objective: This study examines the effectiveness of acoustic reflexes in screening for third window disorders (eg, superior semicircular canal dehiscence) prior to middle ear exploration for conductive hearing loss.

Study Design: Case series with chart review.

Core Muscle Activity during TRX Suspension Exercises with and without Kinesiology Taping in Adults with Chronic Low Back Pain: Implications for Rehabilitation.

This study aimed to examine the effects of kinesiology taping (KT) and different TRX suspension workouts on the amplitude of electromyographic (EMG) activity in the core muscles among people with chronic low back pain (LBP). Each participant (total n = 21) was exposed to two KT conditions: no taping and taping, while performing four TRX suspension exercises: (1) hamstring curl, (2) hip abduction in plank, (3) chest press, and (4) 45-degree row. Right transversus abdominis/internal oblique (TrAIO), rectus abdominis (RA), external oblique (EO), and superficial lumbar multifidus (LMF) activity was recorded with surface EMG and expressed as a percentage of the EMG amplitude recorded during a maximal voluntary isometric contraction of the respective muscles.

Photodynamic therapy of a subretinal neovascular membrane in type 2A idiopathic juxtafoveolar retinal telangiectasis.

Purpose: To report the outcome of a patient with a subretinal neovascular membrane secondary to idiopathic juxtafoveolar retinal telangiectasis treated with photodynamic female therapy.

Methods: Interventional case report. A 43-year-old female with type 2A idiopathic juxtafoveolar retinal telangiectasis presented with a 2-week history of decreased vision and a subretinal neovascular membrane in the left eye.
