Tissue-engineered vascular conduits (TEVCs), often made by seeding autologous bone marrow cells onto biodegradable polymeric scaffolds, hold promise toward treating single-ventricle congenital heart defects (SVCHDs). However, the clinical adoption of TEVCs has been hindered by a high incidence of graft stenosis in prior TEVC clinical trials. Herein, we developed endothelialized TEVCs by coating the luminal surface of decellularized human umbilical arteries with human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC)-derived endothelial cells (ECs), followed by shear stress training, in flow bioreactors.

The ability to predict clinically relevant exposure to potentially hazardous compounds that can leach from polymeric components can help reduce testing needed to evaluate the biocompatibility of medical devices. In this manuscript, we compare two physics-based exposure models: 1) a simple, one-component model that assumes the only barrier to leaching is the migration of the compound through the polymer matrix and 2) a more clinically relevant, two-component model that also considers partitioning across the polymer-tissue interface and migration in the tissue away from the interface. Using data from the literature, the variation of the model parameters with key material properties were established, enabling the models to be applied to a wide range of combinations of leachable compound, polymer matrix and tissue type.

Aim: To determine if high normal early pregnancy HbA1c (35-40mmol/mol), in the absence of diabetes, was associated with increased risk of adverse perinatal outcomes compared to normal HbA1c (<35mmol/mol).

Method: A retrospective chart review was carried out on all singleton births in the Wellington region from 1 July 2019 to 31 December 2019. Exclusion criteria were participants domiciled outside the Wellington region, HbA1c ≥50mmol/mol, pre-existing diabetes, gestational diabetes in current pregnancy, no HbA1c performed <20 weeks or the first HbA1c was taken at ≥20 weeks.

Biocompatibility evaluation of medical devices often relies on chemical testing according to ISO 10993-18 as a critical component for consideration. However, the precision associated with these non-targeted chemical characterization assessments has not been well established. Therefore, we have conducted a study to characterize intra-laboratory (repeatability) and inter-laboratory (reproducibility) variability associated with chemical testing of extractables from polymeric materials.

Background: Single ventricle palliation may be performed in patients with congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries due to hypoplasia of 1 ventricle or anatomic complexity rendering biventricular repair unfeasible. There have been only a few small studies of the outcomes of single ventricle palliation in the setting of congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries.

Methods: A multicenter, international, retrospective cohort study of patients with congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries undergoing single ventricle palliation was conducted in 29 tertiary hospitals in 6 countries from 1990 to 2018.

Aim: The management of cardiorespiratory arrest in a diving bell presents multiple clinical, technical, and environmental considerations that standard resuscitation algorithms do not address, and no situation-specific algorithm exists. The development and testing of an algorithm to guide the management of cardiorespiratory arrest in a bell is described.

Methods: An iterative approach to algorithm development was used.

Background: It is unknown how well cardiologists predict which Fontan patients are at risk for major adverse events (MAEs).

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the accuracy of cardiologists' ability to identify the "good Fontan" patient, free from MAE within the following year, and compare that predicted risk cohort to patients who experienced MAE.

Methods: This prospective, multicenter study included patients ≥10 years with lateral tunnel or extracardiac Fontan.

Tartrazine (E102, FD&C Yellow 5) is a vibrant yellow azo dye added to many processed foods. The safety of this ubiquitous chemical has not been fully elucidated, and it has been linked to allergic reactions and ADHD in some individuals. In our study, bacterial species isolated from human stool decolourised tartrazine and, upon exposure to air, a purple compound formed.

After spinal cord injury, there is an extensive infiltration of immune cells, which exacerbates the injury and leads to further neural degeneration. Therefore, a major aim of current research involves targeting the immune response as a treatment for spinal cord injury. Although much research has been performed analyzing the complex inflammatory process following spinal cord injury, there remain major discrepancies within previous literature regarding the timeline of local cytokine regulation.

Purpose Of Review: On top of existing rites of passage, adolescents with congenital heart disease (CHD) face additional challenges as related to their underlying medical condition. These include compliance with medications and appointments, establishing heart-healthy behaviors, navigating potential at-risk situations, and transition to adult-oriented care.

Recent Findings: Teenagers with CHD should focus on the importance of exercise as this seems to have important long-term benefits and may help improve weight management.

The goal of this article is to describe an integrated parallel process for the co-development of written and computable clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) to accelerate adoption and increase the impact of guideline recommendations in clinical practice. From February 2018 through December 2021, interdisciplinary work groups were formed after an initial Kaizen event and using expert consensus and available literature, produced a 12-phase integrated process (IP). The IP includes activities, resources, and iterative feedback loops for developing, implementing, disseminating, communicating, and evaluating CPGs.

Modern design of common adhesives, composites and polymeric parts makes use of polymer glasses that are stiff enough to maintain their shape under a high stress while still having a ductile behavior after the yield point. Typically, material compositions are tuned with co-monomers, polymer blends, plasticizers, or other additives to arrive at a tradeoff between the elastic modulus and toughness. In contrast, strong changes to the mechanics of a glass are possible by changing only the molecular packing during vitrification or even deep in the glassy state.
