Plasma membrane voltage-sensitive ion channels classically have been associated with a variety of inherited diseases or "channelopathies" that range in the severity of symptoms from mild to lethal. Ion channels are found throughout the body and are responsible for facilitated diffusion of ions down the electrochemical gradient across cells membranes in various tissues. Voltage-sensitive ion channels open in response to changes in the membrane potential and are primarily found in excitable cells and tissues.

The SCM previously demonstrated separate stereotype dimensions of warmth (low-high) and competence (low-high), identifying four distinct out-group clusters.

Small-scale replication studies were largely non-confirmatory, but a meta-analysis that included data from the original study could not exclude all SNP associations, leaving relevance of several markers uncertain.
Methods: Investigators from three Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research-funded genetics consortia-comprising 14 teams-contributed DNA samples from 5526 patients with Parkinson's disease and 6682 controls, which were genotyped for the 13 SNPs.
Conservation scientists generally agree that many types of protected areas will be needed to protect tropical forests. But little is known of the comparative performance of inhabited and uninhabited reserves in slowing the most extreme form of forest disturbance: conversion to agriculture. We used satellite-based maps of land cover and fire occurrence in the Brazilian Amazon to compare the performance of large (> 10,000 ha) uninhabited (parks) and inhabited (indigenous lands, extractive reserves, and national forests) reserves.

All members of the Swedish Twin Registry aged 65 and older were screened by telephone using the TELE, a brief cognitive assessment instrument (Gatz et al., 2002), and the Blessed Dementia Rating Scale (Blessed et al.

Perfusion of 25 and 50 microM bicuculline into the dorsal raphe nucleus dose-dependently increased dorsal raphe nucleus 5-hydroxytryptamine level during sleep and wakefulness. Frontal cortex 5-hydroxytryptamine level was not affected by either 25 or 50 microM perfusion.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the direction of gaze influences the kinematics of the squat exercise. Ten men experienced in the squat exercise performed a total of 30 repetitions of the squat in the form of 2 sets of 5 repetitions under 3 different conditions. Conditions varied with respect to the direction of the subjects' gaze as they performed the exercise.

This paper argues that it needs a firmer base in social psychology. First, we outline some major opportunities from social psychology--the power of social context and social motives in shaping human behavior.

Unfortunately, results from a recent controlled clinical study delivering the neurotrophic factor, glial-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF), directly into brain did not demonstrate efficacy and safety of such a treatment. A critical review of available data suggests that there are questions that need to be answered before the future of GDNF as a therapy for PD can be determined.

Objective: To evaluate genetic and environmental influences on AD in a fully ascertained population of older twins, including like- and unlike-sex pairs.
Design: Five-group quantitative genetic model: male monozygotic twins, female monozygotic twins, male dizygotic twins, female dizygotic twins, and unlike-sex twins.
In two studies, Caucasian and Asian college students recalled their earliest memory of a dream, and they provided information about behaviours and beliefs associated with dreaming. Consistent with previous research on childhood amnesia, participants rarely recounted dreams that occurred before age 3. In Study 1, the mean age of the earliest dream memory was 14 months earlier for Caucasians than for Asians.

We present a case of a 63-year-old man with bilateral, multifocal renal masses. Genetic testing results were consistent with a VHL deletion.

Nondemented co-twins of twins who were diagnosed as demented were compared to randomly selected members of normal control twin pairs in which both members of the pair were nondemented. Nondemented co-twins included 23 monozygotic and 62 dizygotic twins; there were 27 normal control twins. Both monozygotic and dizygotic nondemented co-twins of dementia cases scored significantly lower than normal control twins on 5 of 10 cognitive tests.

Patients with severe disease often exhibit refractory nausea and vomiting and require gastrectomy. Evidence from both mice and human beings suggests a critical role for epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) signaling in the pathogenesis of this disease.

We analyzed trends in a time series of photosynthetic activity across boreal North America over 22 years (1981 through 2003). Nearly 15% of the region displayed significant trends, of which just over half involved temperature-related increases in growing season length and photosynthetic intensity, mostly in tundra. In contrast, forest areas unaffected by fire during the study period declined in photosynthetic activity and showed no systematic change in growing season length.

Subjects: A total population sample of licensed residential homes (38) in Malta and Gozo was used comprising all home managers in government (seven), church (20), and privately run (11) residential homes.
Method: A 19-question questionnaire was designed, piloted and sent to the home managers requesting them to report on the dental care provision for their elderly residents.

Age of onset is an important variable in Alzheimer research, yet remarkably little is known about its reliability and validity. The present study evaluated alternative methods for establishing age of onset for 297 individuals diagnosed with dementia through the HARMONY study. We compared two informant-based methods: a single question in a telephone screening interview and an in-depth, semi-structured, in-person interview.

People less often use, for example, shared social norms to explain another person's behavior. Social psychology's last half-century of research on attribution theory offers precise, validated paradigms for testing how people think about other people's minds.

We analyzed a 14-year data set from great snipe (Gallinago media) leks for evidence of indirect mate choice based on relative and absolute position of lek territories. We found little or no effect of the centrality of territories on mating and no between-year consistency in the spatial distribution of matings within leks.

Design: A two phase qualitative and quantitative study using in-depth interviews with a convenience sample of six parents/siblings, and a postal questionnaire of 200 parents/siblings of adults with DS who are members of the Down Syndrome Association.
Results: The main themes elicited from the qualitative interviews related to concern, experiences, parents'/siblings' attitudes, preferences and information.
Background: As part of ongoing studies to evaluate the analgesic efficacy and pharmacokinetic properties of combination oxycodone plus ibuprofen in the treatment of moderate to severe acute pain, 2 pharmacokinetic studies were conducted.
Objectives: The goals of these studies were to compare the pharmacokinetic properties of monotherapy with oxycodone or ibuprofen with those of a tablet formulation of these 2 agents combined (study A), and to determine whether the absorption of the individual agents when given in the combination tablet was affected by the concomitant ingestion of food (study B).
Methods: Study A was a single-center, open-label, randomized, single-dose, 3-period, 3-way, crossover study.
