Current declines in male reproductive health may, in part, be driven by anthropogenic environmental chemical (EC) exposure. Using a biosolids treated pasture (BTP) sheep model, this study examined the effects of gestational exposure to a translationally relevant EC mixture. Testes of 8-week-old ram lambs from mothers exposed to BTP during pregnancy contained fewer germ cells and had a greater proportion of Sertoli-cell-only seminiferous tubules.

There are five filter-analyzer neutron spectrometers available worldwide for scientists to use in order to measure the vibrational density of states in various samples. While Taipan, the thermal spectrometer, has been operated as a triple-axis spectrometer at the Australian Centre for Neutron Scattering since 2010, a beryllium filter analyzer spectrometer was added in 2016. Due to the complex nature of the data post-processing, it has thus far been impossible to fully treat experimental data from scientific measurements taken over the last five years.

Species differences in hepatic metabolism of thyroxine (T4) by uridine diphosphate glucuronosyl transferase (UGT) and susceptibility to thyroid hormone imbalance could underlie differences in thyroid carcinogenesis caused by hepatic enzyme inducers in rats and humans. To investigate this hypothesis we examined profiles of hepatic UGT induction by the prototypical CAR activator phenobarbital (PB) in rat and human liver 3D microtissues. This study aimed to gain insight on the effect of different seasons of the year on the expression pattern of growth factor and hormone receptors involved in follicle development. A novel follicle wall biopsy technique was used to collect in vivo follicle wall layers (ie, granulosa, theca interna, and theca externa) and follicular fluid samples from growing dominant follicles, simultaneously and repeatedly, using the same mares during the spring anovulatory (SAN), spring ovulatory (SOV), summer (SU), and fall ovulatory (FOV) seasons. The immunofluorescent expression patterns of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), Ki-67, vascular endothelial growth factor receptor (VEGFR), and LH receptor (LHR) were evaluated in each follicle wall layer, in addition to intrafollicular estradiol and nitric oxide (NO).

The crystal chemistry of the cuprate apatites A(I)(4)A(II)(6)(PO(4))(6)Cu(x)O(y)(H)(z) (A = Ca, Sr and Ba) was investigated by powder X-ray (PXRD) and neutron diffraction (PND) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The refined crystal structures confirmed earlier X-ray diffraction studies that showed copper resides in the apatite channels and additionally, located hydrogen. For all materials copper is primarily divalent (Cu(2+)) but in the calcium and strontium analogues co-exists with minor Cu(3+).

The mechanical properties of pure synthetic hydroxyapatite and hydroxyapatite-carbon nanotube composites were examined. Vickers microhardness and nanoindentation using a Berkovich tipped indenter were used to determine the hardness, fracture toughness and Young's modulus of the pure hydroxyapatite matrix and the composite materials. Microscopy showed that for the composites produced the carbon nanotubes were present as discrete clumps.

Synchrotron radiation diffraction data were collected from hydroxyapatite-carbon nanotube bioceramic composites to determine the crystallite size and to measure changes in non-uniform strain. Estimates of crystallite size and strain were determined by line-profile fitting of discrete peaks and these were compared with a Rietveld whole-pattern analysis. Overall the two analysis methods produced very similar numbers.

Apatites commonly adopt P6(3)/m hexagonal symmetry. More rarely, monoclinic chemical analogues have been recognized, including the biologically significant hydroxyapatite, Ca(10)(PO(4))(6)(OH)(2), but the driving force towards lower symmetry has not been systematically examined. A combination of diffraction observations and ab initio calculations for Ca(10)(AsO(4))(6)F(2) and Ca(10)(VO(4))(6)F(2) show these materials are triclinic P\bar 1 apatites in which the AsO(4) and VO(4) tetrahedra tilt to relieve stress at the metal and metalloid sites to yield reasonable bond-valence sums.
