Background: Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) is a multimodal perioperative care bundle aimed at the early recovery of patients. Well accepted in gastric and pelvic surgeries, there is minimal evidence in neurosurgery and neurocritical care barring spinal surgeries. We wished to compare the length of intensive care unit (ICU) or high dependency unit (HDU) stay of patients undergoing elective craniotomy for supratentorial neurosurgery: ERAS protocol versus routine care.

Quadratus lumborum (QL) block is an evolving technique for abdominal surgeries that blocks T5-L1 nerve branches. We used a combination of anterior and posterior QL block given bilaterally in two patients and evaluated perioperative opioid consumption, postoperative pain score and patient satisfaction.

The main objective was to study the morphological alterations and myokines expression in rat gastrocnemius muscle following forced compared to voluntary muscle contraction.
Materials And Methods: Thirty-six adult male Wistar rats were divided into three groups: control, voluntary exercise and forced swimming regimen.
In the past decades, lip-print studies (cheiloscopy) attracted the attention of many scientists as a new tool for human identification in both civil and criminal issues. The present work aimed to study in depth the lip prints of Saudi individuals (males and females) in Almadinah Almonawarah province. It is the first chieloscopic study done on Saudi individuals.

Results from experimental studies suggest that tumour progression and metastasis in breast cancer are angiogenesis dependant. The College of American Pathologists has stated that further study of quantification of tumour angiogenesis is still required to demonstrate its prognostic value in breast cancer.

It is not exactly known whether CsA has a direct effect on the endocrine pancreas or induces its effect indirectly. The present study was therefore undertaken to examine the function and morphology of isolated pancreatic islets when they are directly exposed in vitro to CsA.

A bank of fetal islets could be created with proper storage in liquid nitrogen. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of thawing rate and post-thaw culture on the structural and functional integrity of isolated cryopreserved islets of rat fetuses.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe rat pancreas has frequently been used as an animal model to study changes in islet cells in pathological conditions, such as diabetes mellitus and islet cell tumours, but detailed quantitative data on the islets are not available. This study was therefore undertaken to investigate (1) the volume density of pancreatic islets, (2) islet diameter, islet volume and islet cell number and (3) islet cell pattern, i.e.

The present work was undertaken to study the size classes of the isolated islets and the morphometry of their cellular populations. Islets of the rat pancreas were isolated by using the intraductal collagenase digestion technique, the most commonly used procedure for the isolation of pancreatic islets.

Examination of the preparations showed that they contained B cells possessing secretory granules, each having an eccentric electron-dense core surrounded by an electron-lucent halo; the Golgi bodies with their characteristic features were located in a juxtanuclear position. Roughly surfaced endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria were present and were mostly normal in appearance.

In the early infected cases, serum zinc and copper concentrations showed small alteration to lower and higher values, respectively, compared to the reference. Those with a long history of infection, serum zinc showed a big decrease in its concentration but serum copper showed a great extent of increasement in its level comparing to the reference values.

This membrane was found to be formed by both the superior and inferior diaphragmatic fasciae.
