Background: Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) is a multimodal perioperative care bundle aimed at the early recovery of patients. Well accepted in gastric and pelvic surgeries, there is minimal evidence in neurosurgery and neurocritical care barring spinal surgeries. We wished to compare the length of intensive care unit (ICU) or high dependency unit (HDU) stay of patients undergoing elective craniotomy for supratentorial neurosurgery: ERAS protocol versus routine care.

Ultrasound-guided anterior and posterior quadratus lumborum block for analgesia after laparoscopic hysterectomy.

Laparoscopic procedures are now preferred over open surgeries, and total laparoscopic hysterectomy is becoming increasingly popular. Quadratus lumborum (QL) block is an evolving technique for abdominal surgeries that blocks T5-L1 nerve branches. We used a combination of anterior and posterior QL block given bilaterally in two patients and evaluated perioperative opioid consumption, postoperative pain score and patient satisfaction.

Background: Myokines, a group of small proteins - mainly cytokines, are released by myocytes during muscular contraction and proved to have many biological effects locally or at systemic levels. The present work aimed to study in depth the lip prints of Saudi individuals (males and females) in Almadinah Almonawarah province. It is the first chieloscopic study done on Saudi individuals.

Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths among women. Results from experimental studies suggest that tumour progression and metastasis in breast cancer are angiogenesis dependant. The College of American Pathologists has stated that further study of quantification of tumour angiogenesis is still required to demonstrate its prognostic value in breast cancer.

Functional and morphological study of cultured pancreatic islets treated with cyclosporine.

Cyclosporine A (CsA), a potent immunosuppressive drug, has been found to induce glucose intolerance through its toxic effect on the endocrine pancreas. It is not exactly known whether CsA has a direct effect on the endocrine pancreas or induces its effect indirectly. The present study was therefore undertaken to examine the function and morphology of isolated pancreatic islets when they are directly exposed in vitro to CsA.

Isolated pancreatic islets of the rat: an ultrastructural study.

Pancreatic islets from adult Wistar rats were isolated by an improved collagenase digestion technique. Examination of the preparations showed that they contained B cells possessing secretory granules, each having an eccentric electron-dense core surrounded by an electron-lucent halo; the Golgi bodies with their characteristic features were located in a juxtanuclear position. Roughly surfaced endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria were present and were mostly normal in appearance.

Serum zinc and copper levels in bilharzial patients.

Serum zinc and copper levels were determined for fifty cases with positive infestation of Schistosoma mansoni at Ismailia General Hospital. In the early infected cases, serum zinc and copper concentrations showed small alteration to lower and higher values, respectively, compared to the reference. Those with a long history of infection, serum zinc showed a big decrease in its concentration but serum copper showed a great extent of increasement in its level comparing to the reference values.

The development of the human phreno-oesophageal membrane.

23 human fetal diaphragms were used to study the structural changes of the phreno-oesophageal membrane at the different prenatal ages. 2 human adult diaphragms were used for comparison. This membrane was found to be formed by both the superior and inferior diaphragmatic fasciae.
