Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to identify genomic variations linked to dystonia in the Asian Indian population using next-generation sequencing.
  • A total of 745 individuals were enrolled, and whole exome sequencing (WES) was performed on 267 patients, revealing pathogenic variants in 20.2% of them, including 14 novel variants.
  • The gene THAP1 was found to be the most common associated with dystonia, and factors like multifocal/generalized distribution and family history increased the likelihood of finding positive results from WES.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated how COVID-19 disruptions affected neuroscience research projects and young researchers in India through an online survey targeting medical trainees, post-docs, PhD students, and early career faculty.
  • A total of 504 valid responses revealed that over 83% of participants experienced negative impacts on their research, with one-third noting delays and many adapting their methodologies due to the pandemic.
  • The findings highlighted significant challenges, particularly for those involved in prospective studies, emphasizing the need for focused support for neuroscience research in the post-pandemic landscape.

Article Synopsis
  • Primary CNS Vasculitis (PCNSV) is a rare inflammatory condition affecting blood vessels in the central nervous system, making diagnosis complex due to its variability and lack of clear laboratory markers.
  • A study analyzed 56 patients with confirmed PCNSV, finding that most exhibited symptoms in the cerebral hemisphere or brainstem, with common MRI findings being bilateral white matter lesions, predominantly in the frontal lobe.
  • Key imaging features included a high prevalence of susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) hemorrhages and a distinct dot-linear enhancement pattern on T1-weighted images, suggesting that these imaging characteristics should be considered for improved diagnostic criteria for PCNSV.

Myeloid sarcoma is a very rare extramedullary malignant tumour, most often associated with acute myeloid leukaemia. We report the case of a man in his early 20s who presented with chronic headache, raised intracranial pressure and progressive vision loss of 2 years duration with no systemic manifestations. He had a history of myeloid sarcoma of the left thigh 15 years ago, treated with external beam radiotherapy and in complete remission for more than 13 years.

Objectives: Depression in persons with epilepsy (PWE) goes undiagnosed and untreated. Despite being common, there are no direct efficacy comparisons of available antidepressants in PWE. Our aim was to compare the effectiveness of Venlafaxine (VEN) and Escitalopram (ESCIT) in comorbid depression in PWE.

Background Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection affects and alters various laboratory parameters that are predictors of disease severity and mortality, and hence, their prompt identification can aid in patient triaging and resource allocation. Objectives A retrospective study was conducted on 7416 admitted coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients from 20 March 2020 to 9 August 2021 to identify crucial laboratory biomarkers as predictors of disease severity and outcome; also, their optimal cutoffs were also calculated. A comparison of laboratory markers between both COVID-19 waves was also performed.

Introduction: Post-stroke sleep disorders (PSSD) are an important part of post-stroke disability. PSSD is neglected as a part of stroke rehabilitation. We aimed to study the prevalence and determinants of PSSD in a hospital based, single center setting.

Objectives: The aim of the study was to study the demographical, clinical, radiological features, and outcome of anti-myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) antibody spectrum disorder and compare these features with patients negative for anti-MOG antibody. MOG antibody-associated disease (MOGAD) and aquaporin-4 (AQP4) antibody-related diseases are immunologically distinct pathologies. Our aim was to compare the clinical and radiological features of MOG antibody-related diseases with AQP4 antibody-related diseases and seronegative demyelinating diseases (Non-multiple sclerosis).

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores how Parkinson's disease affects various aspects of social cognition in Indian patients, highlighting impairments in understanding social situations compared to healthy volunteers.
  • Using the SOCRATIS tool, researchers assessed theory of mind, attributional biases, and social cue perception in 52 PD patients and 31 healthy volunteers.
  • Results showed that PD patients struggled more with social cognition and had a tendency to blame external factors for negative events, but these deficits did not correlate with their overall quality of life.

Objective: The objective was to describe the clinical presentations, radiologic features, and outcomes of patients with autoimmune encephalitis associated with myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody (MOG).

Background: During the past decade, the spectrum of the myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated diseases (MOGAD) has expanded. Recently, patients with MOG antibody encephalitis (MOG-E) who do not fulfill the criteria for ADEM have been reported.

Article Synopsis
  • Parkinson's disease and Schizophrenia are associated with low and high dopamine levels, respectively, which can lead to complications when treating patients, such as psychosis and extra-pyramidal symptoms.
  • A new method called s-MARSA has been developed to detect Apolipoprotein E in very small amounts (2 μL) of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), showing a strong correlation with traditional ELISA methods.
  • s-MARSA offers notable advantages, including a lower detection limit, a wider detection range, shorter analysis time, and the ability to work with smaller CSF sample volumes, making it promising for clinical monitoring of treatment in these disorders.

Background: While long-term studies on the correlates of protection, vaccine effectiveness, and enhanced surveillance are awaited for SARS-CoV-2 vaccine, studies on breakthrough infections help understand the nature and course of this illness among vaccinated individuals and guide in public health preparedness. This study aims to compare the differences in the hospitalization outcomes SARS-CoV-2 infection of fully vaccinated individuals with with those of unvaccinated and partially vaccinated individuals.

The pharyngeal-cervical-brachial (PCB) variant is a rare presentation of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), and there is a handful of case reports that overlap with the Miller-Fisher syndrome (MFS) variant of GBS. This overlap produces varied symptoms that may be confusing and challenging for physicians to diagnose timely and start appropriate treatment. In this article, we present a case report and review of the rare overlap of the PCB variant with the MFS variant of GBS.

Carotid artery stenting (CAS) is performed in patients with minor strokes and transient ischemic attacks (TIAs) to prevent further strokes. However, most operators do not intervene in older adults. We had a 92-year patient with recurrent minor strokes with two possible proximate causes - cardioembolism and significant symptomatic left carotid stenosis.

Pyomyositis is an infective involvement of systemic skeletal muscles. We discuss the case of 43-year-old male who presented with quadriparesis, anemia, and hypercalcemia, leading to suspicion of multiple myeloma, and on FDG PET-CT, incidentally, pyomyositis was found. FDG PET-CT thus helped in diagnosing an occult infection which helped in the treatment of the patient.

Article Synopsis
  • Chronic encephalitis, often seen in children as Rasmussen's syndrome, typically includes symptoms like ongoing seizures, hemiparesis, and cognitive decline, with significant brain atrophy observed in imaging.
  • The case presented involves an adult patient exhibiting unusual features such as pseudobulbar affect and multifocal myoclonic jerks, diverging from the typical presentation of the syndrome.
  • Imaging results (MRI and PET CT) confirmed progressive hemispheric atrophy and bilateral symptoms, while a brain biopsy indicated the presence of chronic T-cell infiltration.
