Background: The aim of this study was to quantify mediators of neutrophilic inflammation within airway extracellular vesicles (EVs) of children treated for a cystic fibrosis (CF) pulmonary exacerbation (PEx).

Methods: EVs were isolated from stored sputum samples collected before and after antibiotic therapy for PEx between 2011 and 2013, and characterised by nanoparticle tracking analysis (NTA) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Western blot analysis of EV protein extracts was used for EV canonical protein markers CD63, CD9 and flotillin-1 (FLOT1), as well as neutrophil elastase (NE), myeloperoxidase (MPO) and interleukin-8.

Background: Risk factors for progression of adenovirus (AdV)-associated bronchiolitis (AdV-B) to post-infectious bronchiolitis obliterans (PIBO) are poorly defined. We aimed to investigate this in a multicenter cohort.

Methods: A multicenter hospital-based analysis included children admitted with AdV-B in Jerusalem during 2016-2022.

Article Synopsis
  • Treatment with the CFTR drug ivacaftor improves airway NO levels and significantly reduces sputum IL-1β concentrations in CF patients, without affecting other cytokines.
  • Improved IL-1β levels correlate with better pulmonary function and NO metabolism, suggesting a link between chloride conductance, IL-1β, and airway NO production.

Background: Normal values (>80%) of Forced Expiratory Volume in one second (FEV ) in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) may lead to the interpretation that there is no lung disease. This study is a comprehensive analysis of lung involvement in CF patients having normal FEV .

Methods: Patients were recruited from two CF centers: Hadassah Medical Center, Jerusalem and Vall d' Hebron Hospital, Barcelona.

Objective: To determine maternal plasma levels of soluble vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-1 (sVEGFR-1), placental growth factor (PLGF), and soluble endoglin (sEng) in monochorionic diamniotic (MC/DA) twin pregnancies complicated by twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) or selective intrauterine growth restriction (sIUGR).

Study Design: A longitudinal cohort study of pregnant women with MC/DA twins who were classified into 3 groups: (1) uncomplicated MC/DA twins (n = 22), (2) TTTS (n = 23), and (3) sIUGR (n = 15). Maternal plasma samples were obtained between 13-20 and 21-28 weeks of gestation and cord blood samples were collected at delivery.
