Cardiac arrest causes primary and secondary brain injuries. We evaluated the association between neuron-specific enolase (NSE), serum S-100B (S100B), electroencephalogram (EEG) patterns, and post-cardiac arrest outcomes in pediatric patients. A prospective observational study was conducted in the pediatric intensive care unit and included 41 post-cardiac arrest patients who underwent EEG and serum sampling for NSE and S100B.

Cystic echinococcosis is one of the most significant cyclo-zoonotic diseases of major economic and public health significance worldwide. The current study was carried out to determine the epidemiological profile of cystic echinococcosis as well as to investigate its molecular and phylogenic status from one-humped camel () in the southern region of Egypt. In the present work, 110 camels freshly slaughtered at Daraw abattoirs, Aswan governorate were inspected for the presence of Hydatid cysts (HCs) visually and manually by palpation and incision, over a period of one year (June, 2018 - May, 2019).

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigated the prevalence and identification of a particular parasite species infecting feral cats in Alexandria, Egypt, using both morphological and molecular methods.
  • Out of 100 feral cats examined, 40 were found to be infected, with an average of 2.27 worms per cat, and the species was confirmed through genetic sequencing.
  • The findings emphasize a significant occurrence of this parasite among feral cats in the region, marking the first genetic identification of the species in Egypt, and highlight its public health implications.

Article Synopsis
  • * The highest infections occurred in summer and spring, with the most common metacercariae identified and adult flukes confirmed in cats and rats through experimental feeding.
  • * Cats showed greater susceptibility and more severe symptoms than rats, indicating the need for control measures and ongoing monitoring of zoonotic parasites in both fish and cats.

To eliminate schistosomiasis, appropriate diagnostic tests are required to monitor its prevalence and transmission, especially in the settings with low endemicity resulting from the consecutive mass drug administration. Antibodies that react with either crude soluble schistosome egg antigens or soluble worm antigen preparations have been used to monitor infection in low-prevalence regions. However, these detection methods cannot discriminate current and past infections and are cross-reactive with other parasites because both antigens contain numerous proteins and glycans from schistosomes, and standard preparations need maintenance of the life cycle of the schistosome.

Article Synopsis
  • * Baladi chickens showed a higher prevalence of mixed infections, primarily with four species of cestodes and three nematodes, with Raillietina tetragona being the most common.
  • * Infection rates were found to be related to the age of the birds, with adults more affected, and seasonal variation indicated higher prevalence in summer compared to winter, highlighting the need for more research on the impact of these parasites on poultry health.

Background: While recognizing the etiology of community-acquired pneumonia is necessary for formulating local antimicrobial guidelines, limited data is published about this etiology in Egyptian pediatric patients.

Objectives: To determine the frequency of bacterial and viral pathogens causing community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) among immunocompetent Egyptian infants and preschool children.

Methods: Ninety infants and preschool-age children admitted to our hospital with CAP were prospectively included in the study.

Article Synopsis
  • A three-year-old child in Minia City, Egypt, was diagnosed with an intestinal mite infection after finding mold mite eggs and adults (Tyrophagus putrescentiae) and Blastocystis sp. trophozoites in his stool samples.
  • The child experienced severe abdominal pain and burning sensations around the anus, while other family members had the same mites in their feces but showed no symptoms.
  • Treatment involved ivermectin, given in three doses every 10 days, which resolved the child’s symptoms, indicating he was also dealing with an asymptomatic blastocystosis.

A new name Sarcocystis chloropusae is proposed for a parasite previously found in two of 25 common moorhen (Gallinula chloropus) from Brolos Lake, Egypt. Sarcocysts were microscopic, up to 650 μm long, the cyst wall was up to 4.5 μm thick, and contained villar protrusions that were up to 4 μm long and up to 2 μm wide.

Background: Soluble receptor for advanced glycation end products (sRAGE) acts as a decoy receptor for RAGE which has several distinct pro-inflammatory ligands in the extracellular compartment, and is believed to afford protection against inflammation and cell injury. This study was conducted to measure serum sRAGE in asthmatic children and to assess its correlation with clinical and functional severity and to asthma phenotype according to sputum cytology.

Methods: The study was conducted on 60 asthmatic children from the Pediatric Chest Clinic, Children's Hospital, Ain Shams University.

Chronic airways infection and inflammation are leading causes of morbidity and mortality in chronic lung diseases (CLD). Pulmonary exacerbations are major causes of morbidity in CLD. Exhaled carbon monoxide (eCO) is a product of endogenous metabolic processes whose presence in exhaled breath is considered an index of inflammatory processes.

Heterophyiasis is an important food-borne parasitic zoonosis in Egypt, among the inhabitants living around brackish-water lakes especially fishermen, and it is a common human parasite in the Nile Delta. The experiment was done on two laboratory animals (rats and dogs), and the time of sample collection was done periodically at 6, 9, 15, 21, and 28 days post-infection to evaluate different tests required. Whole blood was collected with heparin or ethylenediamine tetra-acetic acid as anticoagulant to help in the hematological studies such as red blood cells count (RBCs), white blood cells count, packed cell volume (PCV), and hemoglobin (Hb).
