Purpose: Post-procedural urinary tract infections (ppUTIs) following voiding cystourethrography (VCUG) vary widely, with rates from 0 to 42%, though recent studies suggest rates typically below 5%. Verifying urine sterility before VCUG is traditionally done but questioned. This study assessed the 7-day ppUTI rate post-VCUG without prior urine sterility confirmation and identified associated risk factors.

Background: Staged laparoscopic management of intra-abdominal testes using pedicular section is recognized as gold standard technique, successful in 85 % of cases for scrotal testicular position with less than 10 % testicular atrophy. Recently, Shehata proposed a new technique without pedicular division for these testes, using spermatic vessels traction, but did not provide a comparative study of the two techniques.

Objective: To evaluate the laparoscopic spermatic pedicular traction (Shehata technique, ST) for the treatment of intra-abdominal testis, as an alternative to gold standard pedicular section (2-stage Fowler-Stephens, FS).

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzed changes in the diagnosis and management of patients with two types of genetic deficiencies (SRD5A2 and HSD17B3) from 1994 to 2020, focusing on current diagnostic practices.
  • Out of 52 patients, over half were diagnosed at birth, with a trend showing earlier diagnoses for those born after 2007, and a notable shift in initial sex assignment from predominantly female to increasingly male.
  • Genetic testing revealed a variety of mutations in both genes, and the study concluded that there’s been a significant change in clinical approaches and therapeutic interventions based on evolving understanding of these conditions.

Background: Robot-assisted extravesical ureteral reimplantation (REVUR) is a well established approach for surgical treatment of pediatric vesicoureteral reflux (VUR). However, further evidence is needed to confirm its efficacy even in case of complex anatomy.

Objective: This study aimed to further confirm the evidence that REVUR is safe and effective in both simple and complex ureter anatomy.

Introduction: Posterior urethral valves are urethral leaflets that cause Lower Urinary Tract Obstruction (LUTO) in boys and are associated with congenital renal dysplasia and abnormal bladder function. They affect 1:4,000 to 1:25,000 births and can be responsible for End-Stage Renal Failure in childhood. There have been several studies on the effect of pop-off mechanisms in boys with posterior urethral valves, but results are contradictory.

Introduction: Posterior urethral valves (PUV) cause lower urinary tract obstruction leading to increased intravesical pressure during fetal urinary tract development. Though the bladder and kidneys are separate organs, with different embryological origins, they are complementary and influence each other both before and after birth. We aimed to assess the relationship between renal and bladder function in boys with PUV and whether early renal markers could predict future bladder function.

Over the past two decades, assessment and treatment of associated curvature has emerged as a major issue in treating patients with proximal hypospadias. However, the cut-off for defining a curvature as clinically significant is still unclear, as not all patients are bothered by the same degree of curvature and, although the need for a method to assess the curvature objectively has been emphasized, no standard method yet exists. Curvature is multifactorial.

A major complication of feminizing genitoplasty in children is the loss of clitoral sensation with serious impact at adult life. We suggest a new method to evaluate the surgical results during childhood based on the bulbocavernosus or clitoro-perineal reflex (CPR). The afferent pathway of CPR implies the intact sensory receptors on the clitoral glans.

A sizable part (~2%) of the human genome encodes for proteases. They are involved in many physiological processes, such as development, reproduction and inflammation, but also play a role in pathology. Mast cells (MC) contain a variety of MC specific proteases, the expression of which may differ between various MC subtypes.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on the role of murine mast cell protease 4 (MCPT4) in kidney injury caused by ischemia reperfusion.
  • MCPT4-deficient mice showed worse kidney function and increased inflammation, suffering from more neutrophil infiltration and cell damage compared to normal mice.
  • This research suggests that MCPT4 has an anti-inflammatory role by regulating neutrophil behavior, which may help mitigate kidney damage during such injuries.
