Age-Related Macular Degeneration in Patients with Androgenetic Alopecia: Could the Monocyte/HDL Ratio Be the Link?

Introduction: Both Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) shared the microinflammatory milieu and increased oxidative stress as important criteria in their pathogenesis. The monocyte/high density lipoprotein (HDL) ratio (MHR) seems to be an easy-to-calculate prognostic marker of microinflammation.

Objectives: To assess MHR in patients with AGA and its correlation to AMD in these patients, if any.

Introducing an adolescent cognitive maturity index.

Children show substantial variation in the rate of physical, cognitive, and social maturation as they traverse adolescence and enter adulthood. Differences in developmental paths are thought to underlie individual differences in later life outcomes, however, there remains a lack of consensus on the normative trajectory of cognitive maturation in adolescence. To address this problem, we derive a Cognitive Maturity Index (CMI), to estimate the difference between chronological and cognitive age predicted with latent factor estimates of inhibitory control, risky decision-making and emotional processing measured with standard neuropsychological instruments.

P450 fingerprinting method for rapid discovery of terpene hydroxylating P450 catalysts with diversified regioselectivity.

Engineered P450 enzymes constitute attractive catalysts for the selective oxidation of unactivated C-H bonds in complex molecules. A current bottleneck in the use of P450 catalysis for chemical synthesis is the time and effort required to identify the P450 variant(s) with the desired level of activity and selectivity. In this report, we describe a method to map the active site configuration of engineered P450 variants in high throughput using a set of semisynthetic chromogenic probes.

Developing severity adjusted quality measures for intensive care units.

Purpose: Intensive care unit performance evaluation is usually affected by variations in the severity of inpatients' health status. This paper aims, therefore, to standardize two performance measures: intensive care unit survival and length of stay using the Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II (APACHE II) severity of illness score.

Design/methodology/approach: A records study in three Ain Shams University Hospital intensive care units, from January 1-December 31, 2003 was carried out to examine illness severity effect using APACHE II, length of stay and survival.

Surveillance system for HCV infection: testing a model based on blood banks.

Developing a National surveillance system for hepatitis C virus infection could provide a reasonable tool for reflecting changes in the trend of the disease in the Egyptian community. The aim of the study is to develop a national sentinel surveillance system, based on blood banks, by measuring the prevalence of hepatitis C virus antibody in the sera of blood donors. The results were compared with that of the National community-based survey (NS) of the year 1997 from the areas surrounding the blood banks by age-standardized methods.

Mother's knowledge about antibiotic and role of self prescription.

Background: antibiotic use is common and unrestricted in many developing countries.

Purpose: to explore knowledge of mothers about antibiotic regarding its indication, its side effects and to study some behavioral aspects associated with its usage.

Subjects And Methods: mothers attending outpatient clinic in Ain Shams University Pediatric Hospital were subjected to interviewing questionnaire which contains different items aimed to be explored.

Accident prevention program in a glass factory in Shoubra El Khema district.

Background: An accident can be defined as an unplanned event that results in or suggests the possibility of personal injury, property damage production interruption diminished health or environmental damage. The accidents have a cost impact on the employees and the company itself.

Objective: This intervention study was carried out to decrease the accident rate in a glass factory in Shoubra El-Khema district.

Hypertension control indicators among rural population in Egypt.

This study was designed to be a house to house survey to fulfill an interview questionnaire and measure blood pressure for 1927 rural inhabitant at "Bany Magdoul" village located at Imbaba district of Giza governorate. The response rate was 96.4%.

Pre-eclampsia: epidemiology and outcome of 995 cases.

Objective: To study the epidemiology and pregnancy outcome of pre-eclampsia at Ain Shams University Hospital for Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Study Design: A case control study involved 995 cases of pre-eclampsia, 227 cases with chronic hypertension and 1375 cases with normal pregnancy delivered during the year 2000 at Ain Shams University Maternity Hospital. All these cases were critically analyzed regarding to some risk factors as age, parity, blood group, diabetes mellitus, Rhesus factor and multiple pregnancy.

A preliminary screening study on human cystic echinococcosis in Cairo slaughter house personnel.

A descriptive serological screening study was done on human cystic echinococcosis (CE) in high risk groups selected from Cairo slaughter house employees and the household nearby using indirect haemagglutination (IHA) and enzyme-linked immunoelectrotransfer blot (EITB) tests. Characterized camel hydatid cyst fluid (HCF) antigen by 12.5% sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) was used.
