Challenges in disclosure of adverse events and errors in surgery; perspectives from sub-Saharan Africa.

Surgery in sub-Saharan Africa is widely known to be done against a background of poverty and illiteracy, late presentation with complicated pathologies, and a desperate lack of infrastructure. In addition, patient autonomy and self determination are highly flavored by cultural practices and religious beliefs. Any of these factors can influence the pattern and disclosure of adverse events and errors.

Under representation of women in surgery in Nigeria: by choice or by design?

Background: Female Doctors' lack of interest in surgical careers has raised much concern in recent times. An understanding of the factors responsible for this lack of interest and evolving attitude is needed. The aim of this report was to determine the local factors that may be responsible and the most likely surgical specialty female doctors would prefer.

Infected hydrocoele of the canal of Nuck in a neonate.

Hydrocoele of the canal of Nuck is an uncommon presentation in the neonate and complications are rare. A 6-day-old girl presented with a right groin swelling from birth. The swelling remained static until age 3 days when it increased rapidly in size.
