Pupillary assessment is a quintessential part of the clinical examination in neuro-intensive care patients because it provides insight into the integrity of midbrain reflex arcs. Abnormal pupils, particularly anisocoria and later bilateral fixed mydriasis, are classically used to assess expansive intracranial processes because they are frequently considered early indicators of transtentorial midbrain compression due to elevated intracranial pressure. Complex ocular motor deficits mapping to the midbrain are rarely described in the setting of high transtentorial pressure.

A 29-year-old woman suffered major traumatic brain injury caused by a car accident. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the frequency of infarction after transluminal balloon angioplasty (TBA) in patients with severe subarachnoid hemorrhage-related vasospasm.

Cerebral cavernous malformations (CCM) are prevalent cerebrovascular lesions predisposing to chronic headaches, epilepsy, and hemorrhagic stroke. Using a combination of direct sequencing and MLPA analyses, we identified 15 novel and eight previously published CCM1 (KRIT1), CCM2, and CCM3 (PDCD10) mutations. The mutation detection rate was >90% for familial cases and >60% for isolated cases with multiple malformations.

We tested the quality of immunohistochemical stainings in sections of methyl-methacrylate-embedded core biopsies prepared according to the so-called Hannover-method of cold polymerization using the novel biotin-free tyramide signal amplification system in comparison to the alkaline phosphatase-conjugated "EnVision" method. Examining a large panel of immunohistochemical markers, the amplification system proved to be a highly sensitive technique substantially superior to the EnVision-AP method in reliably detecting the antigenic determinants of the target cells and referred to the intensity of immunoprecipitations.
