Article Synopsis
  • Propranolol, a beta-blocker, effectively treats infantile hemangioma (IH) by reducing vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) levels and limiting blood vessel growth.
  • A study investigated how propranolol affects platelet volume indices (PVI) in 22 IH patients, comparing their results to a control group of 25 untreated patients over two months.
  • Significant changes in mean platelet volume (MPV) and platelet distribution width (PDW) were observed in the treated group, suggesting that monitoring these indices could help clinicians track the effectiveness of propranolol in IH management.

There have been several studies that have shown that patients with beta thalassemia major are at a higher risk of thrombosis due to the procoagulant activity of thalassemic erythrocytes, decreased liver synthetic function, increased platelet activity and vascular endothelial activation attributed to chronic oxidative stress, although there are no established tests to predict thrombotic risk in TM patients. In this study, we evaluated whether or not the platelet function analyser (PFA-200) and thrombin generation test (TGT) would be useful tools to identify hypercoagulability and risk of thrombosis in thalassemia major patients. The study included 50 patients with thalassemia major and 104 healthy control group.

Collective narcissism is a belief in one's in-group greatness that is underappreciated by others. Across three studies conducted in the context of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, we found that collective narcissism, measured with respect to the national group, was related to support of policies that protect the national image at the expense of in-group members' health. In Study 1, British national narcissism was related to opposing cooperation with the European Union (EU) on medical equipment.

Background: Psoriasis is an inflammatory skin disease in which the cells and molecules of innate and adaptive immunity are involved in the pathogenesis. Aplastic anemia is a bone marrow deficiency syndrome that is characterized by an extreme reduction in the number of blood cells as a result of failure in hematopoiesis. Allogenic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is a promising treatment for Aplastic Anemia and it is important to note that other comorbid diseases like psoriasis- since both have some common pathogenetic mechanisims- might achieve remission after treatment.

This study addresses an experimental investigation of a novel modified Smith Predictor (SP) based fractional fuzzy gain-scheduled control scheme in control of a time-delayed thermal process. The control strategy employees a fuzzy algorithm to adjust convenient controller parameters based on the system's operating conditions. Performance enhancement of the closed-loop system enables more robust behavior in the presence of disturbance while reducing energy consumption by producing a smooth control signal in comparison with the traditional integer order SP structures.
