Mitoregulin (Mtln) is a recently identified 56 amino acid long mitochondrial peptide conserved in vertebrates. Mtln is known to enhance function of respiratory complex I, which is likely mediated by modulation of lipid composition. To address an influence of Mtln gene on the metabolism we created knockout mice deficient in Mtln gene.

Tay-Sachs disease (TSD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that occurs due to a deficiency of a β hexosaminidase A (HexA) enzyme, resulting in the accumulation of GM gangliosides. In this work, we analyzed the effect of umbilical cord blood cell transplantation (UCBCT) and curcumin administration on the course of the disease in a patient with adult TSD. The patient's serum cytokine profile was determined using multiplex analysis.

In this article we present clinical, molecular and biochemical investigations of three patients with LHON caused by rare point substitutions in mtDNA. One patient harbours the known mtDNA mutation (m.13513 G>A), the others have new variants (m.

We present a 14-year-old girl with loss of motor functions, tetraplegia, epilepsy and nystagmus, caused by a novel heteroplasmic m.641A>T transition in an evolutionary conserved region of mitochondrial genome, affecting the aminoacyl stem of mitochondrial tRNA-Phe. In silico prediction, respirometry, Western blot and enzymatic analyses in skin fibroblasts support the pathogenicity of the m.
